"My Kids Recommend"

What books would your children recommend to their friends?

My 12-year-old son is reading this one right now and he thoroughly enjoys it. If you are looking for a new book for "Harry Potter" or Tolkien fans, this is for you:
ERAGON by Christopher Paolini.
published by Knopf, 2003
The author started working on this book when he was only 15 years old! It is a fantasy book and has a lot of characters to keep track of, but fantasy fans will dig right into this one. It's appropriate for readers from about age 10 to 14.

My 8-year-old daughter enjoys the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park. They are fun to read aloud to younger readers, and children in later first grade or second grade can read them by themselves--but parents will miss out on the fun that way. They are among my favorite read-alouds with my daughter. The books are funny and the characters are very "real."

I got my son a couple of the Jamie Lee Curtis books...we really like them. Great message and illustrations.

I also got my daughter the book by Madonna "The English Roses". Although I questioned Madonna as a children's book writer, I was quite impressed and it is beautifully illustrated.

Robin, thanks for the ideas!
What ages are these books appropriate for? Preschoolers, early readers, etc?

My son would highly recommend The President and Mom's Apple Pie and Miss Smith's Incredible Storybook, both by Michael Garland. They are picture books, intended for pre-school to about 8. They have wonderful illustrations.
Another book he dearly loves is Abiyoyo. It's an African folktale they portrayed on Between the Lions. He had me read it for his preschool story hour.

Thanks, rosmith! It's good to know what age child enjoys what book....so we can keep them in mind for our kids.

Childrens books

Just went to the library yesterday and ran
across an author I really have liked. It is in the children section.
I guess I am still young at heart.
Kate DiCamillo is a favorite.
She wrote
Because of Winn-Dixie,
The tiger rising.
I just ran across another one.
The Tale of Despereaux.
Havent finished it yet- but am enjoying it.
To those that have young chapter readers.
Mel

luvsbird - Tale of Despereux won this year's Newberry award. My daughter has loved all her books, but we haven't done this one yet. Waiting for Lent when we give up TV and read every night out loud to each other.

Karen, I am on my 3rd kid and have yet to read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom! But I got a free copy in a box of Cheerios which I am just about to open (finished the old box this AM). So Luke will get to try out this book.

My whole family loves those Junie B books. She is SO funny, and so like my DD!
