I have finished A Rose in Winter by Kathleen Woodiwiss.

The fairest flower in Mawbry is Erienne Fleming, the enchanting, raven-haired daughter of the village mayor. Charming, spirited and exquisitely lovely, she is beset on all sides by suitors, any one of whom would pay a king's fortune for a place in her heart. But Erienne has eyes for only one: the dashing and witty young Yankee, Christopher Seton.

But marriage for love is not to be, for her irresponsible and unscrupulous father, crippled by gambling debts, is intent on auctioning off his beautiful daughter to the highest bidder. And in the end, Erienne is devastated to find it is the strange and secretive Lord Saxton who has purchased her—a mysterious, tragic figure who wears a mask and a cloak at all times to hide disfiguring scars gained in a terrible fire some years back.

But in the passing days, Saxton's true nature is revealed to her. A gentle and adoring soul, he treats his new bride with warmth and abiding tenderness, yet appears to her only by daylight. She, in turn, vows to be a good and loyal wife to him. And then Christopher Seton reenters Erienne's world Conflicted by emotions she cannot suppress, Erienne valiantly attempts to remain honorable to her elusive, enigmatic husband but feels herself irresistibly drawn to Seton's passion, his fire, and his secrets. Entangled in intrigues she doesn't yet understand, Erienne Fleming will soon have to make a devastating choice: between love and honor . . . between her duty and her heart.

I read the last story in a book by Stephen King. The title of the book is Different Seasons. There are 4 stories. They are Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter. I read A Winter Tale which consisted of a short story titled The Breathing Method.

A man makes his way to a "men's club" that is way more than it seems. It's broken down into four parts where we meet the narrator, find out a bit about him and his lonely life, discover a large room in the club where stories are told and the results of that tale. It's a story within a story. And the last story told is about a disgraced woman who is determined to triumph over death. Most definitely a supernatural novella.

I read A Winter Scandal by Candice Camp. I thought it started out silly but kept reading due to the title. It got better , a very light read, finished it in an afternoon. According to Amazon

When plain and proper Thea Bainbridge stumbles upon a baby in the manger of her church’s nativity, she is understandably shocked. Discovering a brooch bearing the insignia of Gabriel, Lord Morecombe, hidden among the child’s clothing, she is certain the dissolute rake is to blame. Incensed, Thea sets out to reproach the arrogant lord—only to find herself utterly swept away.

Gabriel is intrigued by the vivacity in Thea’s flashing gray eyes when she accuses him of fathering the orphan, even as he adamantly maintains his innocence. The brooch is one he remembers all too well, however, and Gabriel is determined to find the mother of the missing child. As the mystery around the baby deepens, Gabriel is continually thrown together with Thea—and finds himself growing more entranced every day

I just finished "Chilly Scenes of Winter" by Ann Beattie.

Ever read a book so underwhelming and you keep reading anyway because you think it will get better?
I was and I did! It's well written but it's tedious. Charles is all kinds of messed up, obsessing over Laura. Nothing tremendous or exciting happens. It almost read like a daily blog except for that it was written in the 1970s (Which is why I chose the book, I like reading books from that decade) I do like her writing, I just wish she wrote happier material.

hugs, train

It doesn't look like I am going to get a January book in this time. Does anyone know have they started a poll for the February theme yet?
