July Book Club

For July we will read a book with the names of a place in the title. Can't wait to see what everyone picks to read.

I really enjoyed it. It starts with the end of high school & the girl who did not fit in being taken to the school ditch day & dropped off by a teacher. Her mom is the town drunk. She leaves the next day for college & puts herself through & gets her Masters in business. Soon she marries & she & her dh own a gaming company. He commits suicide & she finds he owned loan shark 1 1/2 million bucks. She sells everything & pay part of it then runs back to her hometown where she realizes she is pg. The rest of the story tells of her dealing with her demons, finding friend among the misfits she encounters & how she opens a restaurant. They all work for her , finds out who her father was. There are 2 other books about there characters. Im getting them

I just finished The House on Tradd Street by Karen White.
Practical Melanie Middleton hates to admit she can see ghosts. But shes going to have to accept it. An old man she recently met has died, leaving her his historic Tradd Street home, complete with housekeeper, dog? And a family of ghosts anxious to tell her their secrets. Enter Jack Trenholm, a gorgeous writer obsessed with unsolved mysteries. He has reason to believe that diamonds from the Confederate Treasury are hidden in the house. So he turns the charm on with Melanie, only to discover hes the smitten one...It turns out Jacks search has caught the attention of a malevolent ghost. Now, Jack and Melanie must unravel a mystery of passion, heartbreak? And even murder.I don't usually like this type but it grabbed you & I ended up ordering the next one from the library

Backstairs at the White House by Gwen Bagni & Paul Duboy is based on the novel My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House by Lillian Rogers Clark.
These are the authors who wrote the teleplay for the TV mini series and then wrote this novel based on the series.

It is the story of Maggie Rogers and her daughter Lillian who were maids in the White House. It is a warm and intimate novel. Maggie's first day on the job was 4 days after President Taft became President.
Lillian's last day was at the end of President Eisenhower's administration.
Life in the White House kept everyone on their toes. At all times. Maggie was 2nd maid on the 2nd floor which is where the living quarters were for the First Family. Intimate details are given on each administration.
Lillian was a maid but because she was an excellent seamstress she spent most of her time on her sewing machine making everything from gowns to pillowcases.
Your job at the White House became your life. People you worked with were your family. Your private life revolved around your job. There were days when you did not go home at the end of your shift. Instead you remained on the job.

An interesting and informative novel. One I would recommend.

Cau, I am going to see if I can get My Thirty Years Backstairs at the White House from the library. I would like to read the original novel written by Lillian.
