Family Language Programs

Our school system is considering offering Family language programs in the upcoming months. family language programs would focus on learning about the culture, music and foods associated with the language. These programs would focus on families with elementary age children learning together and would build on the international diversity of our community.

Languages offered are Arabic, Albanian and Russian.

I think it would be interesting to give it a whirl not sure if dh would participate but I do think it would be good for the kids.

Does your community offer any similar programs?

Our school district just sent out a poll asking for feedback on the very same thing. I think it's a great idea. I was taught Spanish in school from 2nd through 8th grade, then I took it in high school for 2 years. I'm not fluent, but I'm definitely conversational, and it's due to the early and repeated exposure to the language. I'm looking for an afterschool or summer camp program in Spanish now to get my own boys into.

Our district does have a bilingual instruction Elementary school which I thought about enrolling our boys in, but when I got the paperwork about it, it seemed more focused on getting the Spanish-speaking students to speak more English, and the English-speaking students would just *happen* to learn Spanish by being around the Spanish-speaking children. I'd like more guided instruction than that, like I had.
