Anyone a librarian?

I just started working a few hours (8 to be precise) a week at our school's library. I'm working in the library... straightening, shelving, checking in and out, displays, etc. I'm just wondering where to look for free or very cheap posters or displays. I figure I can make some posters on my computer and print them myself, but would like a variety of things for the kids to look at in the library. Any ideas?

Hello, it sounds like we have the exact same job except I work 3 hours a day for 15 hours total a week. Most of our posters we get from the places we order books. A few I have gotten of the web. As far as bulletin boards we get a lot of ideas out of the magazine "mailbox" . I will look on Monday when I go to work and post some of the websites that we have used.

Hey - you could also contact your local Chamber of Commerce - a lot of times they will have posters & colorful maps giving information about the local area.

This is a great resource for free items. Sometimes, places like NASA, various governmental offices will offer free posters/ themes. Also, check with your state library, or the ALA website. They provide options to you. I am a trustee and am currently taking classes to become a librarian. A previous children's librarin had a "Hands on" box. She put things like sea shells, pine cones, feathers and other "Touchables" in this box and put it on her desk. It had the kids very interested in her and made her very approchable. Sometimes, being a boring or "hands off" librarian can give librarians a bad name.
There is a government clearing house that publishes many things free of charge. I know that Jann Brett has a raffle every month and donates a book to each library (up to 100) that answer the questions correctly. Check her website.
Best of luck!

Also, contact your public library. Many times, when they are finished with items, they just store them or dispose of them. They are a great resource for public schools.

I'm a librarian also, and my advice is to contact your local chapter of the School Librarians Association. (You should be able to find contact information through the ALA -- American Library Association -- website.) Many, many other schoool librarians also face this same problem and will be able to help you out.

Good luck!

librarian

publishers are the best place to try - most of them are only too glad of the free publicity!
