Just curious, I have never heard of a school letting kids out early if they don't have a class that period.

In my son's school there are no study halls or free periods. Just classes and lunch.

His school also only has homeroom on the days when there is an assembly (strictly for "babysitting purposes," this way a certain teacher is in charge of the kids). Attendance is taken in the first-period class and the office figures it out from there.
