There was an article in a well-known (and very good) consumer magazine awhile back that said that the worst liquid laundry detergent out-performed the best powders in their ratings (I guess because it's no secret that powders don't completely dissolve in water). I also have found that using the Tide Kick pre-treater ball works very well, probably because it drives the detergent into the dirt instead of just rubbing or brushing it on like other methods. It stands to reason that if the detergent is just laying on top of the dirt it can't do much to get it out. Hope this helps.
