The Benefits of Exercise: Weight Control and Beyond

We always have an excuse not to do it – too tired, too busy, too stressed. However exercise is something that is recommended by every health professional regardless of age. Exercising helps with all of those excuses, and research shows that every little bit counts. 1. Exercise boosts energy. A University of Georgia study showed that as little as three times a week, twenty minutes a day relieved the fatigue of participants as much as 65% over a six week span. 2. Exercise slows down aging. British studies of twins’ DNA have been significant in this finding. One twin was active, the other not. The telomeres, or tail end of DNA strands were longer and indicated longer life spans in the active twins, versus the shortened tails of the inactive twin. The inactive twin’s DNA strands got shorter as cells died, indicating a shorter life span. 3. Exercise can make you smarter. Studies have shown that the formation of new brain cells increased and strengthen the connections between them. 4. Immunity is strengthened by exercise. Ongoing studies are showing that regular workouts delayed the decline of immune functions in the aging population. 5. Regular exercise created a better overall being. Stress was reduced, endorphins were stimulated, and a more positive outlook was obtained. Participants felt stronger and healthier, with regular exercise promoting better sleep habits, stress management, and even a better sex life.
