Q:

I am having a baby in another month. I haven’t worked out in a while but would like to start walking again after the baby is born. What is my best plan of action?

A:

IF you are comfortable, and it is OK with your practitioner, I would recommend walking now. On a treadmill is good because you have the rails, or around your area, carrying a cell phone In case you need to call for help if you go into labor, or it starts raining.  The longer you are inactive, the harder it will be to get started. Afterwards, you should wait a minimal of 6 weeks before taking on any exercise routine because of bleeding and other considerations. GET YOUR DOCTORS OK! Then, when they say it is OK, set yourself an exercise schedule. Toning exercise should be done daily (but they can be short 5-10 minute sessions). Cardio, walking and aerobic excursus, should be 3 20-30 minutes sessions a week (longer if you feel OK). I did 50 minutes 5 days a week for 6 months after I had Wyatt.

Avoid competitive sports for a while. Avoid straining, because your joints are still going to be very flexible (as long as you are nursing too). Muscle strain is easy while you still have the hormone relaxin in your system. Make sure you stay hydrated (especially if you are nursing). My trainer tells me to drink 24 ounces of water BEFORE I get to the gym, and them to continue drinking during my workout. If you experience any dizziness, blurred vision, heart pain, shortness of breath, back or pelvic pain, or an increase in bleeding STOP and call your doctor. I highly recommend What to expect the First Year by Heidi Murkoff and Sandee E. Hathaway, it has a great exercise section and is just a good book to have around!
