Prevent Winter Problems, Clean Gutters & Downspout
Fall is a great time to clean gutters to be sure they
provide proper drainage in the winter. Wait until most of
the autumn leaves have fallen and follow these cleaning
-- Use a ladder that reaches about a foot above the gutter.
-- Take out all debris from gutters. You'll probably need
gloves and a container.
-- Sweep the gutter clean with a stiff brush.
-- Use a forceful spray from a garden hose to flush away any
remaining debris and make sure the gutter isn't blocked.
-- Check for leaks using the garden hose.
Make sure you don't damage the gutter by resting the ladder
against it. Also, direct the downspout away from the house
so water doesn't collect against the foundation.
