How To Sort Fact From Television Fiction

The popular, attractive characters in television sitcoms
can give children a false sense of reality. Help prevent
these unrealistic expectations by pointing out the fantasy
in television programs.

Give your child the tools to sort fact from fiction by:

* Talking about the nature of television and fantasy.

* Pointing out that the situations and relationships in
sitcoms do not always depict real life.

* Assuring them that struggles and disappointments are a
normal part of real life.

* Discussing how the situations portrayed may have turned
out differently in the real world.

Also, talk to your kids about the nature of the television
industry. Children should understand that these stories are
intended to sell products for sponsors and to make money
for television studios.
