Fresh Snow Makes Tasty Treats

Don't stay inside when the snow is falling. Get out, gather some up, and make these easy, tasty treats from Vicki Lansky's classic cookbook for parents, "Feed Me! I'm Yours" (Meadowbrook Press).
Snow Mousse

2 cups heavy cream/ 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla/ 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar/ large bowl of clean, fresh snow

Combine the cream, sugar, and vanilla. Whisk in snow gradually, adding more snow until mixture is thick and creamy. Sugar and flavorings may be added.

Ice-Cream Snow

1 cup milk/ 1 egg, beaten/ 1/2 cup sugar/ 1 teaspoon vanilla

Blend ingredients well and add clean, fresh snow until the mixture is absorbed.

Spoon thawed orange-juice concentrate over a dish of snow to make Orange Snow.

Pour maple syrup over a cup of snow to make Maple Snow.

Maple Snow Candy

Fill large pans with fresh, clean, firmly-packed snow. Boil real maple syrup until it reaches the soft-ball stage, then pour it in a thin stream from a large spoon onto the snow. After the syrup has started to harden, it can be lifted in sections with a fork and twisted into elaborate shapes.
