Tying Ribbons Around The Moon

February 12th, 2013 posted by Christine Woodley

One weekday afternoon when my older son was four, he was flopped on his bed, sprawled on his back looking out the window upside down. He started talking about the moon and the sun and how he’d like to tie one of them with a string, or some such whimsical idea. The point here is not what he said, but that he had the unfettered, unstructured opportunity to say it. It was downtime, daydreaming hour, or any other name you’d like to hang on it. It is also one of the best reasons I stay home with my kids. The other day a friend and I were having a friendly discussion (via e-mail) about daycare vs. kids who stay home with mom. She works full-time and was asserting that her kids are involved in more “kid-centered” activities more of the time, instead of being hauled off to the supermarket or gas station with mom. Well, there’s some merit in that, but there’s also value in those everyday things I do with my 3 year old (the younger one now) in tow. And, there’s also that delicious downtime that he enjoys…when he lays on his back and dreams of tying ribbons around the moon. I wouldn’t trade him that opportunity for anything. I’d rather he dream about the moon, than have me working full-time to try and buy it for him. That’s my 2 cents, and I know being home isn’t for everyone, but for me it’s worth everything.
