So You Want to Be a Work at Home Mom

Mom and child

If you are a Stay At Home Mom and looking for ways to supplement your income, there are many opportunities available to increase your current income. Hopefully after you set up a work at home business, you'll be able to splurge once in a while on that Gymboree outfit you've been eyeing!

First, it's important to take stock of your talents and find what you desire in a work at home situation. Is it your wish to get out of the house more? Then perhaps a party plan in direct sales is the opportunity you are looking for. Do you prefer to be home plugging away on the computer for fun? Maybe a future in an e-business creating websites for other work at home moms is for you! Whatever your talents may be, make sure that they fit with what you want to achieve. It would be a waste of time and energy to join a direct sales company if you do not like selling to people face to face. On the other hand, it would also be difficult to start an e-business only to find that you crave and need daily contact with others in order to be a more fulfilled person.

Above all, make sure that you truly enjoy what you want to do at home. If you have never enjoyed doing paperwork before staying at home, you probably will not enjoy doing it after being at home, either.

Once you have mapped out what you desire in a work at home situation, it is important to research all of the opportunities that are available to you. Many moms think they are limited to selling kitchen items when it comes to working from home. Actually, it is quite the opposite. Moms are starting businesses from home with jobs like:

-- Accounting/bookkeeping for small businesses,
-- Child Care Services
-- Desktop publishing/Newsletter publishing/Writing
-- Selling products in direct sales,
-- Reselling items on popular auction websites
-- Website design and maintenance
-- "Virtual" administrative assistant services

These are just a few ideas to supplement your income. With a little creativity and persistence, you will surely find the opportunity to fit your lifestyle and needs. Also, be sure to analyze every angle when you start the process of finding a company to work with or if you decide to start your own business.

Now you have talked it over with your husband and perhaps you have even prayed about your decision. What next? Well, this is where the real work begins! If you are starting your own business, you will be studying many resources in the coming months. One good place to start is http://www.sba.gov and for women in business, browse through http://www.sba.gov/textonly/womeninbusiness/. If you decide to join a direct sales company, it's important to find excellent training resources to teach you the business. Many online direct sales companies host live "chats" for their consultants. Make sure to take advantage of all the resources that are available to you!

When starting your own business, be sure to find all the answers to questions about sales tax, depreciation expenses, accounting software, financing sources, which products/services to offer, etc. Many business owners find that developing a business plan provides them with a "map" to operate their business. Even more important is how you will promote and market your business.

If you are excited about joining a direct sales opportunity, there are dozens of legitimate and well-paying companies out there to choose from. Visit the message boards at http://www.momsnetwork.com for some different options for these companies. There are also companies that work strictly on the Internet to market their products. There is something for everyone!

Lastly, it is so important to plan for the amount of time and the amount of money that you will be investing in this venture. Be sure that you and your partner have laid out strategies and even back up plans to make your work at home opportunity successful. It is essential to plan for the slow times as well as the booming times to ensure long-term success. With the right resources, a positive attitude, a will to work long hours alone, and a love for what you do, you will surely find the best work at home opportunity for you and your family. Good luck and much success to you!
