Kid's Book Reviews
"The Dandelion Wish" by Sandra Ann Horn
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Childhood is such a magical time, filled with unrivaled imagination and hopefulness. In "Dandelion Wish", Ms. Horn captures this magic in a sun-drenched field of dandelions.
Jo and Sam lazily blow the white puffy seeds . Sam invites his friend to blow all the seeds with one breath in order to get a wish. When they succeed, and with a little help from the summer breeze, clear all the seeds in the field, something amazing happens. A carnival of dreams and secret wishes parades down the road and sets up residence in the dandelion field. The two friends spend and enchanted afternoon with circus animals and performers. Only when evening falls and their families carry the tired children back home does the excitement ebb.
If you ever believed that wishes can come true, or saw the magic of a night sky lit with fireworks, this is a lovely book to share with your youngster. The illustrations are soft and wondrous, a perfect accompaniment to such and enchanted story.
"Belly Button Boy" by Peter Maloney
Reading level: Ages 4-8
Billy likes to dig. Billy likes dirt...alot, and like most kids, Billy has a belly button. This is no ordinary belly button, though. Somehow, layers upon layers of dirt, gunk, goop, loam, muck and gravel collect in it. The contents of his navel really is a geologist's dream. Billy is not worried, because a little dirt never hurt anyone, right?
One morning, to Billy's surprise, something very exceptional begins to happen in his belly button. While he is trying to figure out how to handle this new development, his problems keep growing and growing. Should Billy sit at the supper table or in a terra cotta planter?
You'll have a great time with this imaginative, colorfully illustrated book. Beyond the giggles it is sure to cause, this is a super reader for younger kids.
