Can I Use Over the Counter Wart Remover?
by Gwenn Schurgin O'Keeffe, MD, FAAP

Dear Dr. Gwenn,

My 7 year old granddaughter has 2 warts on the left side of her stomach. They stick out 1/4 inch. She has had them about 6 months. I called the Dr to make an appointment. The cost was $60 to $200. She doesn't have insurance. Is it ok to use a wart remover over the counter?

Signed,
Alice

Dear Alice:

The over the counter wart removers work great but are often as costly as an office visit to a dermatologist. And, both avenues will require the same amount of time for results - typically 1-3 months depending on the wart. I'd suggest you try a moderately priced over the counter product for about a month and if it doesn't work consider paying to see a specialist. Your pediatrician can help guide you to which over the counter product would be best to try. One word of caution. There are a few wart-like lesions that do not respond to treatment and just go away with time. Your pediatrician can alert you if that is what your granddaughter has.

Best,
Dr. Gwenn
