Oh No! Another parenting book I thought
as I opened the first crisp, fresh page of yet another guide on how to raise
your children. Being the editor of an online parenting magazine I see many
books on how to raise children, from the tedious 'how to change a diaper'
kind to the sometimes fun 'how to raise a delinquent' humorous kind.
So, I sat in a quiet corner with the words to my husband "I HAVE to read
this book for a review" (an excuse to take a break from being a Mom) expecting
to be bored by the third page.
I was in my quiet corner for half the day, pouring over the pages, taking
in every word, my husband knocking at the door politely wanting to know when
I might be emerging. This book, 10 Principles of Spiritual Parenting, is
the parenting manual I've been looking for ever since my son was born. No
how-to's, no 'you're doing it all wrong' feelings rushing through the pages.
This is a gentle guide to raising good people, people who care about other
people and themselves. This book is about how to raise little people into
big people who have a firm grasp on reality and who they are. A solid hold
on how to overcome hardships and bath in victories without feeling embarrassed
or over egotistical.
It takes Ten simple principles starting with "Know God cares for you" and
ending with "Make each day a new beginning" and show you how you can weave
them into the daily fabric of your life, and your children's -- producing
a home where families care about each other, and kids won't end up on
drugs.
Each principle contains practical ideas
and tips on how to implement these principles in your life. There may be
some you could never imagine doing (as there were for me) and others such
as flowers on the dinner table and eating by candlelight as a family that
I started that very night. This book shows us how to 'listen to the children'
and really hear what they are saying, and live in their magical world.
The ideas can be brought into your home with kids anywhere from newborn to
teen but the sooner the better. With a heavy spiritual tone, this book is
not about God in the traditional church sense but rather about inviting
everything that is God-like into your life every moment of every day.
Having come from a difficult childhood I also found something to this book
that perhaps the authors did not intend -- it's a great bible to use for
re-parenting yourself if you were never parented well. In introducing your
children to the gift of spirit, you can also remind
yourself what life is all about and have the childhood you never dreamed
you'd get right along with your child.
The best way to promote a healthy and happy
relationship with your child is through communication. Show your child how
much you care by saying these comforting phrases often:
* You're very special to me.
* Thank you for being patient.
* I'm so lucky to have you.
* Thanks for trying so hard.
* I'm proud of you.
* You're a great kid.
* I'm glad you're part of this family.
* I'm listening.
* I love you very much!
Remind your child that you care. You will be rewarded when the favor is returned.
What's more, these phrases may also help both of you the next time you are
having a particularly frustrating day.
