Organizing Your Bedrooms & Closets

Are you tired of stepping over clothes and shoes to get to your bed? Do you want to be able to find that special shirt hidden somewhere in your closet? Can you even see the floor of your closet?

Guests may not see these areas of your home often, but you see them everyday. You should enjoy your bedroom and like what you see when you walk into your closet.

Here are several ways that you can improve the quality of your bedroom and get that closet organized so you can find what you want when you need it.

Bedrooms

  • Get in the habit of making your bed right after you get up in the morning. This takes little time and will give the bedroom a clean, organized appearance.
  • Use under-the-bed storage organizers to contain any extra blankets and things you seldom use.
  • Try not to use the bedroom as an office, workout room or storage area. It should only be used for dressing, sleeping, and relaxing. The bedroom is a place of rest and should be serene and comforting.
  • Keep your nightstands clear. There should only be a lamp and maybe one other item, such as an alarm clock or a book. Store any other books and magazines in nearby drawers or on a bookcase.
  • Eliminate clutter on dressers. Get rid of unnecessary knick-knacks and cut down on numerous perfume/cologne bottles. Make sure all dresser tops have been wiped free of dust.
  • Have a special place for each small item to avoid it getting lost. For example, keep your watch and jewelry in a jewelry box or tray and try to put them there every time you take them off. Once in the routine, you will always know where they are if you don't have them on.
  • For organized dressers & bureaus, keep each type of item in their own drawers. One dresser might have an underwear drawer, a sock drawer, a pajama drawer, and a T-shirt drawer. If you must combine two items like underwear and socks, use dividers to keep them separate.
  • Clean out your drawers about every six months. If you haven't worn it in the past year, you probably won't wear it next year. These items should be tossed or donated.
  • Make everyone in your family in charge of his or her own room. Before leaving in the morning, they should have beds made and everything tidy.
Closets
  • When you're ready to devote plenty of time to this task, go ahead and remove everything from your closet and review the contents.
  • Sort the items into piles. Your pile categories should be: Keep, Toss, and Donate/Give to Friends/Sell.
  • Only keep what you love and wear. Try items on to make sure they fit. If it doesn't fit, either toss it or give it away. You should toss any items that are out of style, need fixing, or haven't been worn in a year.
  • Once you have your final keep pile, decide on how you want your closet set up. If you have a larger budget, you may want to invest in a custom closet system. If not, anything you may need to help organize can be found at The Container Store, Lowe's, Home Depot, or IKEA. Don't buy any organizing items unless you need them and have room for them.
  • Shoe organizers are great for every clothes closet in the house. There are many different designs and they can be placed on doors, against closet walls, or installed above or under closet shelves. Shoe bags that hang from doors are usually a bit clumsy. Organizers that can be installed or can sit against the wall are best.
  • Use tie and belt racks instead of cramming these accessories in drawers and use labeled storage bins for items that can be put away on overhead shelves.
  • Install more than one clothing rod. Rods at varying heights help to maximize your storage space. However, make sure they are the right height to avoid clothes dragging on the rod below or on the floor.
  • Divide your clothes into groups. For example, keep all jeans in one section, dress pants and skirts in another, and shirts in another. You could divide your shirts further by season: spring/summer & fall/winter, or by style: Dress or Casual. Then color code within those groups.
  • When putting items back on the racks, make sure all clothing and hangers are facing the same direction for a nice, uniform look.
  • Thick, plastic hangers are more durable than wire ones and you can even use different colors for each section of clothes. Once you take something off a hanger, place the hanger on one side of the closet to avoid it getting hidden between clothes.
  • Only keep a few extra hangers for each person in your family. You can always get more when you buy more clothes.
  • It's a good idea to have a special laundry bag for clothes that need to go to the dry cleaners.
  • For clothes that you don't want to hang up because of unwanted hanger marks, try using closet shelves or a hanging clothes organizer with dividers. Canvas hanging organizers are nice and can have up to 6 sections with room for 3 sweaters or shirts in each.
  • Any boxes, bags, and storage bins should be neatly placed on overhead storage racks.
  • There should never be any clothes or shoes on the closet floor. When you take of your shoes, just slip them on the shoe rack. When you are trying on clothes, hang an item up before you take another off.
Following these simple guidelines, your bedroom and closet should look great. Just a little tidying up at the end of each day should keep everything in line.

Put Your House In Order:
Organizing Strategies Straight From The Word

You don't have to be the "Queen of the Organizationally Challenged" any longer! Do you think that is impossible? Are the dishes piled so high you can't get into your cupboards? As quoted at OrganizedTimes.com, "With God, nothing is impossible." (Luke 1:37) Is it about time someone came along to coach you on how to keep your home clean? Cheer you on? To give you the home management advice you need to get your house in order? Debbie Williams has wrapped a tremendous amount of valuable home management information in one 103- page book.

Written by a professional organizer, Put Your House In Order by Debbie Williams is a course in time management and clutter control. Like parenting skills, homemaking skills are mostly a learned behavior, rather than being entirely instinctual. Being quite "challenged" myself, I was very blessed by Debbie William's advice and HOMEwork. Like it or not, piles of clutter and mountains of dirty laundry do add unnecessary stress to our lives. With some planning, some action and a little upkeep, that source of agony can be taken care of.

Put Your House In Order reveals tips and tricks to help you do just that, with Biblical themes and lessons throughout. It is biblically inspired therapy for those who consider their homes budding disaster zones.Put Your House In Order is a must read for all of us seeking a balance between career, family, yourself and your dishes.

Your house can indeed be In Order. Get yourself a copy of Put Your House In Order and get it together!
