10 Simple Organizing Ideas
by Jenny Gautreaux

Jenny Gautreaux, Professional Organizer, offers these common sense tips to help keep you more organized.

1. Set Your Goals: Plan what you want to get accomplished. Have a Master List and a Daily To Do List. Everyday, move a few items from the Master List to The Daily To Do List and check them off as they are completed.

2. Declutter your Desk: Clear off your desk and clean out your files. When tackling stacks of paper, either: Do It, Delegate It, Delay It, or Dump It. Keep all similar material in categories organized alphabetically.

3. Keep Phone Time Productive: Plan a certain time for calls and have the necessary material in front of you. Retrieve the info needed and limit that phone time to get more done during the day.

4. Write It Down: Don't rely on your memory to get the job done. Use a planner or palm pilot to organize your day. Use just one calendar to avoid scheduling conflicts.

5. Delegate: You can't do everything yourself. Delegate in the office and at home to lighten your load. Train and follow up with your delegates to ensure these tasks get accomplished.

6. Set Deadlines: Don't just say, "When I get a chance." Set a definite date and time and get the job done by that deadline. Making a false deadline for days before the actual deadline will help eliminate a last minute rush.

7. Toss or Donate: Throw out old magazines, extra newspapers, unworn clothes, expired food, etc. You probably won't miss it if you forgot you had it or haven't used it in over a year.

8. Complete the Day: Take time at the end of each day to prepare for the next. Put things back where they belong, make tomorrow's To Do List, plan meals, and tidy up.

9. Rest and Relax: Set aside some "Me time" during the day, end each day on a good note, and get 7 or more hours of sleep. This will keep you positive, alert, and on schedule.

10. Stay on Top: Don't stop organizing. Make these tasks a routine for a more organized life.
