Step by Step Rose Bush Pruning
It's time to prune the rose bushes.
Pruning your roses will give you healthier plants and flowers. Some people
are intimidated by pruning roses when there is no need to be. It is a very
simple, fun and rewarding project. All you need is a pair of loppers or other
pruning device, a pair of gloves and a wheelbarrow or box to tote away the
clippings. Put on your gloves and let's get started.
The first thing you want to do is cut off all dead, diseased or damaged parts.
When disposing of this diseased wood, don't put it in your compost pile because
it could spread the disease to other plants. You can burn or throw these
parts away.
Cut Off Crossing Branches
The reason you do this is because these crossing branches will damage each
other in time and that damage can lead to disease. You only need to take
off one crossing branch. To decide which branch to take off, pick the least
healthy one.
Prune For Shape
Basically, you want a V shape for your rose bushes because this lets air
and sunshine into the middle of the plant which promotes health. Selectively
take out inside branches or branches growing inwards.
Finally, take the plant down about one-third its size. When doing this on
each branch left, cut just above a bud facing outwards about one-third down.
This will help the plant in growing into that preferred V shape.
See, that wasn't so hard now, was it? Your rose bushes will thank you. Pat
yourself on the back, fix a cup of tea, sit back and enjoy a much deserved
break.
