Dilemmas
Q: I have been trying to figure
out what to do with a kitchen window. I have an interior kitchen with only
1 large window that is 112 inches long and 46 tall on the North wall of my
kitchen.
The problem is that the house is terribly
old and the window is a new double pane slider window. The ceiling on the
one end of the window is about 10 inches from the sill and it gradually goes
up to where there is only about 6 inches between the sill and ceiling on
the other end.
I have been trying various things to try to help hide the difference between
the ceiling and sill trim, but so far I haven't come up with anything that
really hides the problem. We just recently remodeled the house and there
was no way to correct the problem without a major amount of work that we
couldn't afford.
I have a beautiful view out the window
and don't want to hide the view or restrict the light that I receive from
the window. Any suggestions would be extremely helpful.
Thanks,
Pat
A: If I'm understanding your dilemma correctly, the best solution
I can think of is to install a curtain valance at the ceiling, and have the
length of the valance be long enough to hide the uneven wall space above
the window. Probably about 15-16", which is a good length for a valance.
An arch style valance may also help. That is the style where the center of
the valance is shorter and the sides are longer, either to the lower sill
or halfway down the window.
You must accept that it will always
look off somewhere. If you correct it at the ceiling and window top, the
eye will be able to see it below. However, the trick will be to find the
best solution that minimizes the dilemma and draws the eye away from the
problem.
