Autumn Decorating With Slipcovers
by Gail McCauley (for Sure Fit Inc.)

Slipcovers offer a simple yet creative way to alter the look of any room within the home. The 2001 Autumn season is all about color and texture. By varying color palettes, patterns and fabrics slipcovers can stylishly transform the appearance of any space.

As the majority of sofa slipcovers retail for less than $200.00, seasonal decorating represents an attainable goal. Focus on fashioning the existing color scheme to resemble the crisp and natural colors of Autumn. "Hot" Autumn colors for the 2001 season sport a combination of rich and bold hues, contemporary neutrals and updated earthtones. Reds, displayed with innovative tones such as spice, cranberry, wine and burgundy can be utilized to revitalize various forms of seating, including traditional choices such as sofas, loveseats, dining chairs as well as unexpected seating options including recliners, wing chairs and ottomans. Contemporary neutrals that top the charts for Autumn 2001 include khaki, linen, taupe, stone, sand and wheat colorations. These versatile hues offer practical slipcover color selections which graciously blend with most any style of decor year round. Updated earthtones consist of several variations of green (sage, olive and moss) as well as innovative newcomers including eggplant, antique gold, mushroom, caramel and cinnamon. Currently gaining popularity in todays home furnishings market, the updated earthtone palette is an aesthetically pleasing choice for slipcovers with the ability to coordinate with decors that range from Country to Contemporary, Shabby Chic to Southwest and Traditional to Tuscany.

Cotton has traditionally been a preferred slipcover fabrication. However, this Autumn season has seen a surge in the growing preference for comfortable yet more luxurious slipcover fabrics. Faux leather slipcovers offer superior durability and easy care spot cleaning. Warm, comfortable chenilles bring a silky luster and casually mottled hues, yet provide a sturdy and practical choice of fiber for slipcover any style furnishing. The prominent appearance of velvet slipcovers displays a return to elegance within fabric selection. Velvet slipcovers are striking choices to take center stage at any Thanksgiving feast (and can extend well into the remainder of the holiday season).

Incorporate touches of Autumn into your home interior by selecting appropriate slipcover patterns which display the Fall theme. Consider coordinating any variety of stripe with solids that echo Autumn's splendor. Traditional Autumn florals are abundant in muted, multicolored, tea stained and scrolled leaf slipcover patterns that highlight the popular "bringing the outdoors inside" theme. A newcomer to the slipcover scene, herringbone designs mimic classic menswear furnishings and add stylish texture that is most suitable within a family room, study, home office or den.

For a distinctively unique slipcover look, consider adding novelty trims and accessories to Autumn slipcovers. Affix rope, fringe or cording to an ordinary throw pillow or gathered slipcover skirt. Or, add buttons around the slipcover skirt for an added punch of texture.

Allow the innovative use of color, fabrication and pattern to awaken Autumn into your home with the creative use of slipcovers. By seasonally changing the slipcover color scheme and choice of fabrics within a space, it is possible to rejuvenate old furnishing favorites!
