  Scarecrow Wreath
by Twila Lenoir

Make this fun and happy scarecrow to adorn your door this autumn. He's full of smiles and fall cheer, so don't miss out on this one.

You will need:

SCARECROW:

1 skein of brown or tan yarn
pattern for shirt
pattern for pants
1 sheet brown felt
plastic carrot
large google eyes
red pipe cleaner
3 inch Styrofoam ball
material scraps
3 shirt boards or cardboard cut into 3 - "8 x "11 pieces

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

Tape 2 shirt boards together at the top and bottom, and wrap the yarn around 150 times to form the body. Take another piece of yarn and slide it thru the card board and the yarn at the top and tie a knot, and slide the yarn off the cardboard.

Place the Styrofoam ball at the top where you tied the knot, and spread the yarn over the ball to make the face. Using another piece of yarn, and tie another knot at the neck.

yarn doll Using the last cardboard piece, fold in half and wrap yarn around 75 times the length of the cardboard. Slip off card board and lay flat. Take 2 pieces of yarn and tie one at each end and knot, leaving a little yarn at the ends. Slip thru the middle of the body where the neck is and make sure the arms are even on each side. Now tie another piece of yarn for the waste. Cut the loops at each end of the arms. Cut the loops at the bottom and separate the legs. Take 2 more pieces and tie one on each end for the legs and knot.

Print the patterns and cut out, trace onto material. For the shirt, place the pattern onto the fold of the material and cut out. Cut the v for the neck out and place over the scarecrows head. Using a hot glue gun, attach the sleeves under the arms and glue up the waste.

Cut out the overalls, placing the pattern on the fold. Cut the square out to slip over the scarecrows head. Glue the sides of the pants and the v for the inside leg seam. Fold the pants to create a cuff (can be done for the sleeves as well).

scarecrow Attach google eyes with hot glue, the carrot for the nose, and a pipe cleaner for the mouth using the picture as a guide.

Using a brown piece of felt, take a corner and fold it to the side of the felt so that you will be making a perfect square, trim off the piece that is remaining. Now take the 2 corners from left to right and glue up one side. Now you have a cone with a triangle sticking out, fold that piece up onto the hat and glue.

Now take the point and fold it to the rim and glue. For the point of the cone hat, fold down and glue down to the side. Cut 4 small squares of the shirt material and pull the sides of the string so they are frayed on all sides. Glue 2 on the pant leg, one on the bib of the overalls and two onto the hat.

WREATH:

grapevine wreath
silk fall leaves with stems
1 hank of paper twist (choose a color that matches your scarecrow's shirt)

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do
Un-twist the entire hank of twisted paper. Wrap around the wreath so that some of the wreath is still showing, glue the ends together.

Lay 2 stems of leaves on one side of the wreath, starting where the two paper twist ends are. Attach the stems. Cover the two ends of the paper twist and the end of the stems with a big 2 loop bow and tails.

Place your scarecrow on the bare side and wire down to the wreath through the back.
