Angel print
ready made frame with glass
sheet moss (optional)
dried flowers (optional)
stiff cardboard (for mat backing)
Damask or other textured fabric in a color that compliments angel print (for
mat)
spray adhesive, such as Spray Mount
Glaziers points (see note)
brown craft paper or wallpaper that compliments fabric (for dust cover)
Tacky glue
X-Acto knife or razor blade
extra-fine point gold-ink pen
screw eyes and wire or sawtooth hanger and gold wired ribbon
You will also need ruler; L-square (optional); scissors; glue gun
(optional)
Note: If you purchase a new frame, it may come with bendable staples for
securing the matted print within the frame. If the frame you use does not
have bendable stales; you'll need to purchase glazier's points to secure
the matted print. Glazier's points are available at hardware stores.
Angel prints can be found in art books and on calendars, posters, greeting
cards and postcards. If you use an angel that's part of a larger picture,
decide how you want to crop the picture before cutting it. Be sure the corners
of perfectly square when cut to size.
Selecting and Decorating the Frame
Measure the print. Choose a frame approximately 2 inches larger on each side
than the print to accommodate the print and the mat. We used 8" x 10" and
11" x 14" gold leaf frames, but you can use any size or any finish that
complements your print. If you are using a frame purchased at a tag sale
or one you found in the attic, clean it first, then pain or stain it. If
you wish to decorate the frame, use a glue gun to adhere sheet moss and/or
dried flowers to the frame.
Making the Mat
Cut the cardboard to fit the inside of the frame. Cut the damask to fit the
cardboard. Spray the wrong side of the damask with the spray adhesive, then
press the damask firmly onto one side of the cardboard. Smooth out any wrinkles.
(If desired, miter the corners of the damask mat.)
Assembling the Framed Print
Use the ruler or L-square to venter the print perfectly on the damask mat.
Spray the back of the print with spray adhesive, then adhere the print face
up to the damask. Clean the glass, removing any lint, and place the glass
in the frame. Next, place the matted print in the frame. Secure the back
of the mat with the glazier's points.
Finish the frame assembly by measuring and cutting the brown craft paper
(dust cover) to fit the outside of the back of the frame. Using the tacky
glue, glue the wrong side of the dust cover to the back of the frame; trim
edges, if necessary, using the X-Acto knife and ruler. Attach the screw eyes
and wire to the back of the frame for hanging. Or attach the sawtooth hanger
to the back of the frame. Loop the gold wired ribbon through the sawtooth
hanger and tie the ribbon ends into a bow for hanging.
Finishing Touches
To make a gold border around the print, paint a beaded line around the edges
of the assembled print directly onto the outside of the glass using the gold-ink
pen. Make a row of tiny dots or a more elaborate wide geometric or scrolled
border, as shown. Because the ink is permanent, practice your technique before
working on the glass. But if you do make a mistake you can remove the ink
from the glass with a razor blade. When the border is complete and the ink
is dried, clean the glass gently with a non abrasive cleaner.
