I would love to have a view like that, old car and all. City living really bites! As you can tell from all the problems I'm having with trashy neighbors! Nothing more so far, thank god except sleepless nights worrying about our truck. We have insurance but if they total it, the bank gets the money and we're left with nothing including the down payment! I do have extra insurance to cover the actual value of the car and not book value.
Well I'm off to backtrack on here and find Boggz Applesauce recipe. I bought 12 lbs. of apples from Aldi's tonight, it was buy 1 get 1 free... they are Gala I hope those are o.k. to use. I also bought 6 lbs. of Granny Smith apples for the Apple Pie Jam. I think I have pectin will have to check.
Boggz-

I finally got through all the posts. I started, than we went to Wal Mart to do grocery shopping. Got home and put all groceries away and started dinner. Than just as dinner was finishing, we got company. We are having problems with neighbors around here and one family and our family seem to be the only ones that are trying to stay mutual. Such fun!
I am not sure who mentioned about dating their sweeper bag. But, one frugal reason would be to track how long the item lasts, than if you were ever to see the item go on a really good sale you would know how many to purchase to get you through for a certain amount of time!
Couponing is something I really need to start back to doing. I could never do as good as some people say they do.
I use dented cans also but also, will not use bulging or rusted canned goods. I am wonder if the rusted ones should not be used on account of tetanus?
Although this is not overly frugal, but, it made me feel good. Our food bank for our area is really in need of food. So when I made a trip to our local grocery store today, there were sponsors there for the food bank. I bought spaghetti,(67 cents) spaghetti sauce(89 cents) and baked beans(3/$1). So, I basically donated an entire meal plus, for under three dollars. (I consider meatless spaghetti a meal.)
That is a great idea for the food bank to do that. And nice of you. When I know there is going to be a food drive (like at Christmas time) I try to get some exta food items that are on a really good sale. Our local "food bank" type thing had to skip giving out boxes of food for July. The newspaper said they buy food from a foodbank in a larger near by city though. I don't know if that means they don't take food donations locally or what.
I've thought about joining the coupon club, but we don't get a city paper with coupons every week. I don't come across that many coupons. Maybe if I could clear out some of the other clutter around here, I could make time to get a paper & go thru it for coupons. While we were staying at a hotel in Dallas (at half price because we booked thru experian or something) someone left most of their paper for others to read etc. I got the coupons & this week I will use 40 cents off of 3 cans of Grands biscuits that are on sale for 88 each, BUT we used coupons at El Chico & we got one meal at $7.29 free & the waitress let us use two coupons so we got another $5 off! That was great. I probably should have waited & posted that on the coupon thread, but it is not a regular thing for me.
QUANTITY: An average of 21 pounds is needed per canner
load of 7 quarts; an average of 13-1/2 pounds is needed per
canner load of 9 pints. A bushel weighs 48 pounds and
yields l4 to l9 quarts of sauce-- an average of 3 pounds per
quart.
QUALITY: Select apples that are sweet, juicy and
crisp. For a tart flavor, add 1 to 2 pounds of tart apples
to each 3 pounds of sweeter fruit.
PROCEDURE: Wash, peel and core apples. If desired,
slice into water containing ascorbic acid (use one
teaspoon of powdered ascorbic acid per gallon of cold water)
to prevent browning. Place drained slices in an 8- to
10-quart pot. Add 1/2 cup water. Stirring occasionally
to prevent burning, heat quickly until tender (5 to 20
minutes, depending on maturity and variety). Press through
a sieve or food mill, or skip the pressing step if you
prefer chunk- style sauce. Sauce may be packed without
sugar. If desired, add l/8 cup sugar per quart of sauce.
Taste and add more sugar, if preferred. Reheat sauce to
boiling. Fill hot jars with hot sauce, leaving l/2-inch
headspace. Adjust lids and process.

her wicker bookshelf...I took it over to the house along with the coffee table, and two t.v. stands. It's starting to look like a house. I just need a table still but I won't worry about it. For now until we can get more furniture, I'm just happy that we can move in next week...and with these OUTRAGEOUS prices at the thrift stores, I'll be better off buying new. But until then, we will be fine with what we have.
I just need contact paper for all of the shelves, some shelf liners, and a soap dish before we move in...so that's not bad. The car should be fixed by then as well so I won't have to worry about it overheating. I'm gonna hit some more yard sales next weekend looking for furniture. Today I'm just relaxing and doing nothing.
Today's my mother's birthday, dd and I called and left a message. I sent her a seasoned cast iron skillet for her birthday, I hope she got it. I sent her a regular one a few birthdays ago but she could never season it right, this one is factory seasoned so she can use with no fuss. I guess I'll talk to her tomorrow-(we talk once a week on Sundays)-and I'll find out if she got it tomorrow.
