we had to cut up trees today. one fell over and landed on the house, not alot of damage. but some. and one fell over our drive. that was bad. we ran. joe stayed..but the kids and i ran for moms. we got there and stayed like 3 hours. the power was off here for about 8 hours. my middle dd was at her dads..and i couldnt talk to her untill about 3 today. i was sooo scared. it tore up the closest towns here bad. but we are ok. one tree bounced off my horse barn, and took out my gate and smashed it. mom said thats ok..a gate is only 300 for it. so not to worry. my horses were ok. so i was happy. my parents are ok, and my family are ok. so its all good here.

other than that..not much else going on here. just working on the budget..and getting things ready for the lawyer. trying to get a grocrey list done..and things planned for here for the summer. its my dd destinys 8th birthday next summer and we plan a cook out for her. so im trying to get that all figured in. so things are good here. hope we dont have any more storms for a while. i hate them.

you all have a good day.

It was dark and dreary here this morning.. we were supposed to get rain but it didn't happen.

My frugal things today:

1. Cooked up a big batch of Johnny Marzetti for this week, several meals.

2. Ate leftover hot dogs from yesterday's dinner for lunch today.

3. Went to Volunteers of America they were doing a half price everything in the store sale. I found 2 cast iron skillets, a small one and a large. I had looked at the large yesterday, it was 4.99 but someone had set it down on something with plastic and it was coated on there good, so I didn't buy it. Today it was 2.49 and I thought maybe a SOS pad would take it off, so I bought it and the other little one which was also 4.99 1/2 price made it 2.49 or 2.50? so I brought it home and got the idea of using dh's sander on the bottom of the skillet. Dh did it for me, put a little more muscle into it and lo and behold, the plastic came off! He did the inside too where there was a little spot of rust. So I now have 2 irons so when I want to make a "old timers" recipe such as oven fried apples I have the proper equipment

I also found at another thrift store a large 3 piece storage container set so that'll be handy for storing crackers, bags of pretzels, tortilla chips, etc. the smaller ones will be good for dry beans, etc. it was only $2.99. Another thing I found was a pampered chef plastic saucepan with a lid on it, it has pourable spouts so this will be handy for heating sauces, it was .90 cents.

So I found a few good buys today. Well we see you all in the morning... have a good evening everyone.

Joesbaby, I'm glad everyone is OK. Your area has really been hit hard lately. Those storms are so scarey.

I know what it's like to go through a storm when one of your children is elsewhere. You can't relax until everyone is accounted-for. We turn into mother hens, and need all our kids close-by.

The sun peeked out this afternoon, just long enough for us to get the chicken grilled. Now it's raining again. I finished the garter I was working on - it looks cute!

Anna good find on the cast iron. We are going this week end to get a big camping skillet and a dutch oven. Cast iron is all I use. I even have 2 skillets that belonged to my Gramdmother. They are used daily. She got them when she was just married. So those two are over 50 years old and still going strong.
I did the same frugal things this weekend as always. I did a little scrapbooking. Just the kids class pictures. They are now in thier albums.
It looks like we will have blue skies today. That will be a nice change from clouds and rain.

Cast Iron Skillets

I had some that belonged to dh's grandmother and in my ignorance they had rust on them and I didn't know they could be saved and threw them away that was many years ago. the ones I bought this weekend I can't tell if they are american made or foreign as I can't see who made them... I'm guessing since I can't see it they probably are foreign made. There is a company in Ohio that still sells American made but they are very expensive but in the long run probably well worth the money.

Good morning-

Really rotten weekend here, weather-wise--rained EVERY DAY! And more is expected for today!! Yuk!

Did a few small outdoor projects--in light rain--or they never would have gotten done. Haven't been able to hang clothes out for about 2 weeks. Will have to use dryer again today.

Frugal weekend--since it was too icky to do anything--didn't spend much money. The kids played with friend/neighbors as much as possible--had a pot-luck with the neighbors.

Dinner tonight will be spaghetti carbonera--pasta, eggs, cheese, bacon, with a salad. Have all ingreds. on hand--sick of meat after grilling out 2x this weekend.

Traded some hostas with the neighbor--so I didn't have to buy any for a new bed I'm making along our walkway. Also went to a plant sale at a local gal's place--she has different things than I've seen before, they're hardy and I know they will grow since she takes them off her plants! Very reasonable--I hope they all make it. Tip for hostas: place crushed egg shells underneath to prevent slugs. Worth a try!

Should get going-need to get to town to place my ad for garage sale this weekend--can't wait to get that done. Did get alot done on it this weekend with all the rain.

Rivermom-

Spaghetti Cabinera sounds like a good idea... wish I could get dh to eat eggs when he was in elementary school they raised baby chicks in a incubator and after that, he will not under any circumstances eat a egg unless it's like well hid in a meatloaf or something. Strange husband... he will eat chicken though

That is a good idea exchanging plants with the neighbors and certainly a very frugal way to go.

Cast iron skillets

Anna, thanks for letting us know that sand the cast iron skillets works. I had heard that some where before but wasn't sure if it worked. But, now that I know I will look for at yard sales!

dh, pulled the string to our light on the fan/light celing fan, and pulled the string right out. We thought we would have to replace the entire fan.

So, I had to go to K-mart anyway. While looking at the fans, I found the piece that he needed to fix the current fan! Total cost $2.49 and some gray tape!

Also got at Kmart: Antenna rabbit ears, for dd's room $8.00, for a TV that was given to us last weekend. The ears were normally $15. These will also come in handy, for when you never know what the future will bring. Guinnea pig food 4 lbs, for 5.23 and 10% discount, and pig bedding 5.0 cf for 5.49, this bag will last for several weeks, whereas at WalMart same price bags only last 3 weeks. And ink refill kit for my printer, for $24.99 claims to fill 12 times, both black and color. The color cartridge alone was $19.99. So that was a big savings. Also bought other various items, shampoo, conditioner(can't seem to find a good sale on these items) soap, dog flea collar, dog shampoo, 2 decks playing cards(schools almost out). My first Uno game, 25 pk washcloths $5. two packs of cookies(not frugal), salad dressing and a play doh set for dd(she paid us back with the money she got for saling her extra bike). And two big boxes of freeze pops (each box contains 100 pops)(will hide those in freezer for when I don't have time to make homemade) for total of $5.

Total cost was $102.97 with tax!! dh's eyes almost popped out of his head. But, I reasoned that the ink alone was $25+tax. So that takes the bill down to 81.48. The fan fixture savings a new fan would have cost a minimum of $20, but with just the fixture it was a savings of 17.51, and saving the headache of taking the whole light/fan fixture out and completely replacing the whole thing. And the ink could have cost $419.76 in the long run!! and dd paid us back for her $15 item, down to 66.48. and then the pig bedding, will last at least 5 times longer than the other stuff we were buying(same brand just bigger [bulk] bag) another long run savings of $25. So with the savings of the ink refill virtually everything else was "long run" "cost free".

So, now that I have justified my "shopping spree" I feel better!

Just wanted to make sure I clarify- we used a motorized sander.. you know the kind you use for sanding wood, although I suppose if you were muscular enough sanding paper by itself would work too but that plastic was melted on there but good! I used the irons last night to fry up turkey burger and it was absolutely wonderful! Now I'm on a search for more pieces.

Where did you get the ink jet refill? Ours is running low.. it is so annoying, every time I turn on the computer it comes up telling us it's running low. We rarely print anything once the novelty wore off:p

Thanks for clarifying that you used a motorized sander, I guess if it is just a little rust using a piece of sand paper would work.

I got my ink refill kit at K-mart, it was called ink station. It works for many different printers. And refilling the cartridges was a little intimidating, but I think from here on out it will be a breeze, and well worth the savings.

I myself don't print alot, except for the kids' chore charts. But, the kids print alllloooottt of junk. I have to monitor what they print!! I want them to save the ink for school reports, and special pictures.
