I used to buy braided garlic from the French Market for years and just hang them in the kitchen and grabbed one when I needed it. How they go about braiding the garlic is a puzzle to me, but you just have to pull and one comes off at a time. Since I don't drive anymore and have no man friend, I have to buy my garlic at the grocery now. Don't put it in the fridge. Keep out in sight. I don't know about the placing in dark stuff. I don't see what that could do to it, but I'm going back to read that link and see what they say. Garlic is a staple in Louisiana, you just gotta have it to cook with. Good luck!

Fresh garlic has a very long shelf life. You can learn a lot about garlic by typing "storing garlic" in your browser. All the links below and more will be listed.
I do not store garlic in oil in my refrigerator for more than a week due to botulism concerns.
Storing Garlic
Unbroken garlic bulbs will keep for up to 3 to 4 months. Individual cloves will keep from 5 to 10 days. Store in a cook, dark, and dry location (dampness is the bane of garllic, so store away from stove and sink). If the cloves sprout, the garlic is still usable and the sprouts can be used for salads.
To preserve garlic cloves after they have been peeled, place them in a jar, cover with olive oil, seal jar, and store in refrigerator. They will stay fresh 3 to 4 months this way.

I've had three garlic bunches sitting in a bowl on the ledge in my kitchen for about a month, they're still good!

Good Evening, my frugal buy for the day ws at Meijers. Went in for milk and they had their reduced cart out today. Bought juice boxes for a nickle for the kids lunches. Mot of these were 100% pure juice. Also box of Cheerios and pasta for .25.
I learned something from your discussion on the garlic. We eat quite a bit of it and I have always kept it in the refridgerator. Will be getting it out of there!

On one of the TV shows I watch, they warned about placing garlic in a jar of oil for long periods. They said not to store in oil no longer than 3 to 4 days or it can become deadly. They explained it at the time, but I just can't remember exactly what they said, but it produces some deadly germ that is bad for you to consume. When you buy chopped or whole garlic in jars at the grocery, it's not actually in an oil based ingredient. I just thought I would mention this so none of you ladies would get sick from it. Thank you kindly for reading this warning. ;-)

I have read not to store garlic in oil either causes botulism. I have put it in spaghetti sauce that has been canned with no problem, don't know the difference unless it's the high heat and vinegar content?
Once more on the Kirby subject. $50.00 a month may seem easier to come up with and get instant gratification but if I wanted a new vacuum cleaner and a good one, Walmart and Kmart both have layaway plans. As do some other dept. stores.

I'm thinking about going to the store and finding some dish towels and fabric to match. I want to make some of the little towels you hang on the stove for Christmas presents. I have a pattern for one that looks like a dress on the top of the towel. Other than that, I'm not sure. I do need to hang some sheets out, but first I've got to see if the sky clears up!

I haven't done anything frugal in DAYS! I have just done what needs to be done. I have been trying to keep really busy so I don't think about my appointment tomorrow. The only reason I mention it now is because the doctors office just called to remind me of it.
