I think that was started to ward off evil spirits wasn't it? Your costumes were supposed to scare off the evil spirits. My neighbor doesn't celebrate either and sorry, Czechlady but it's a little sad. The little boy is so saddened by this, they won't even allow a pumpkin... he told my husband the other day he didn't think it was fair. He's I think 7. My dh told him, well you can enjoy mine. I don't know what their religion is, I know they don't go to church, they don't celebrate Christmas either or birthdays.

Sears used to sell appliance paint. You could repaint it to match.

Anna they sound like Jehova's Witness. We had some as neighbors growing up for a while. The boy was in my class and his mom would come pick him up from school whenever we had a party of any kind. They didn't live near us for too long and we always felt sorry for Mike.

Leasmom - Mmm, that was very interesting about Columbus. I've never heard anything about it before.
Jayne - I agree with you about how if you want to make something evil you can.
We celebrate Halloween, but the kids go trick or treating, actually they call it trunk or treating in the church parking lot (half a block down) We bring our cars over about 5pm, set up the trunk with the treats, decorated a little, then the parking lot entrances are closed off, and the kids go around and trunk or treat. We usually have about 250 kids. Last year I ordered a bunch of things from Oriental Traders and the kids just loved them, we have enough left for this year too. My kids usually wear costumes that aren't scary. Chauncey is going to be Harry Potter and Sloan is going to be a ballerina. My bil use to work at a big haunted house, and he'd give us free tickets every year. It really bothered me how the people that worked there were really into trying to scare people really bad. I don't think that's a thing to be proud of doing, and I won't ever go to another one. Halloween has gotten to be so commercial these days! Oh, after the trunk or treating, they have a hot dog dinner, then the youth usually do a carnival for the kids, so it's a real full evening. I don't take the kids out door to door anymore, and I don't give anything at my door, because all the neighborhood kids should have been at the trunk or treating, but we always get people who drop of car loads of kids, and they come to the door and ring the bell even when all the outdoor lights are off!

Isn't that just so annoying, we do go door to door, as we live in a trailer park, and everyone knows everyone else in some way or another!!! But, my kids by the age of 8 realize that if the porch light is not on, don't even bother to go to that door!!! I strictly forbid them to go to a lights off home. As, to respect the occupants of that home.
But, when either I run out of treats, or the curfew time is I turn off the lights, and then there are kids, knocking at the door.

I had such fun with Halloween growing up & after all it is FREE CANDY. How can I resist that? In later years, I learned more about the Hispanic aspect of the holiday. They use it as a time to honor their loved ones who have died. That appeals to me as I have lost both my parents. The way I allow my ds to enjoy the day is about the same as I treat the rest of the year. I don't dwell on things that are evil & try to avoid witches, ghosts, vampires. I even stay away from the modern hulk & spiderman, etc movies because they no longer seem like the good guys in the newer shows. (Not to mention I am a tighwad & just picky about what I will spend money on.) I haven't had to & probably would not spend very much on costumes. My ds had a hand me down batman last year & Tigger costume for this year. My church has also had the trunk or treating the last 2 years, but no carnival. We also go out to the nursing home to trick or treat, and do not do door to door in neighborhoods. My sil's church does the carnival where they use Bible character costumes, but it is about 30 min drive away & we havn't ever gone to that, although I would support that type of activity if it were closer to home.
Leasmom - I'm glad you listed that site. I never liked history at all, so I never learned much of the "good" stuff. I didn't get thru all of the article, but have heard a lot about how history books taught in school have left out so much of reality.
Well...I slept a few hours today so did dd. I know no more 1 to 2 a.m. any more! I have a touch of insomnia!
I just made meatballs for dinner for the meatball sub we're having, I just made some pudding for dd's lunches tomorrow and I will be sitting down to make her a few cup meals so she can take it to lunch tomorrow. I need some pizza cheese, eggs, and milk but I just didn't feel like going to the store. So, will make the rest of dd's lunch foods later.
I'm going to wash out some baggies today and not going anywhere...thats still frugal!
Joesbaby, is your dryer electric or gas? My gas one went out, thermal couple unit. It's a little piece that isn't hard to replace. If it's electric, well I'd go with whomever said something in the electric box in your dryer. Maybe the firing mechanism? I'm at a loss for electric dryers.
Been pretty frugal lately as it's 2 days till payday and not any $$$ to spend. Did go to Dollar Store and got a tube of toothpaste for $1.00. I didn't know you could buy toothpast for $1.00!!!! I was so happy. Now if we can just not have to spend any money till I get paid Wednesday, I'll feel like wonder woman for making it without going in the red!
Another frugal thing, my babysitter went to her parents house and dug up a whole bushel basket of sweet potatoes and told me take what you want. I walked out with 6 big potatoes. Had them with beef stew and cornbread the other night.
Frugal..........Brought drinks and water with me to work, instead of buying them. Bagels, too.

[i]Originally posted by nagymom redcardinalbird next time tell them you don't have your card with you. I've done this and they will either use one they have at the register or they'll ask another customer if we can borrow one. The Winn Dixie here can also just put your phone number in and pull it up that way. If all else fails, I have also simply asked for a new card.
Jayne - I did tellher I did not have my card and she told me to put my phone # in, it would not accept my # nor my mom's. She told me to get another card but line at service desk was long plus it would mess my totals up for boxtops etc.
Columbus Day - our kids did not get out of school, and the state and local govt workers here had to work. Only the feds got out.
We celebrate Halloween. I do not let the kids dress up as devils or real scary figures. We do let them go to some of the neighbors that we know. I have also taught them not to go to the houses that do not have lights on. I also learned that All Hallows Eve was to scare the bad spirits away. The following day is known as All soul's day.
