What Did You Do Frugal Today~June 2011

For encouragement in frugal ways--large and small--look no further. This is where we share helpful hints for stretching our money, saving time and making sure we don't waste resources.

Remember, "frugal" does not mean "don't spend money!" It means "be wise with what you spend!"

What did YOU do frugal today?

Anna

My frugal today was going back to the thrift store while I was getting my discounted gas at Turkey Hill ( 40 cents off a gallon gotta like that) and found one of the two Salton yogurt makers I was going to buy the other day but didn't because they didn't have the instruction manual with them.. thank you Bluebird for the link hopefully tommorow I'll start making yogurt and saving myself the $1.79 for buying them commercially.

Good Morning. Had a busy weekend. We have the pool going. We set up the new grill. It works wonderful. Dh won the weekly drawling at the VFW yesterday just under $200. You pay a $1 a week to be in it. So he is head for while. Will put that money in the bank to help pay for the grill.

Packed dh and my lunch for work today. Will make dinner at home.

Stay frugal.

Good morning all!!

Cheryl, I have prayed for traveling mercies for you and your family as you take that trip today. I am sure you will find something really special at the Amish Store.

Anna, way to go getting a yogurt maker. Instead of going out, I think I would have broken into that "emergency stash" of food you have, and found something.

Being on one of the major routes to the beach, I wasn't traveling anywhere yesterday, unless my gf called. Luckily she did not, and was able to hole up here at home.

I spoke with my sister, and she is going through another rough patch. Her feet are swelling terribly and the drs. have decided she needs to put those blow-up things that go on and off, on all night, since water pills are not controlling the swelling. Well, they seem to be setting off her RLS, not letting her sleep at night. Not sleeping is not good for her mental health issues, so it is a big, bad circle.

I fixed a scoop neck top that was just too low. I took a t-shirt I bought at goodwill, cut it under the arms. From that I cut a piece to go across the front of that scoop and used some fabric glue to put it in place. Now it looks like it was there all the time. I bought a black t-shirt and the top is gray with a random black design around the scoop. And I don't feel like I am showing the world all that is in my bra.

Ladies, better go for now. I need to get breakfast and get out the door.

Take care all!! Norma

I got the recipe for Funeral Pie and explaination off the internet.

I'm getting ready to hang a load of towels out on the line, they should be dry by the time I get home from the doctors.

I need to mow tonight when it cools off (supposed to hit 92 today), I hate not being able to mow early mornings (is 70 now) but it is too damp. Looks like Wednesday could be more rain.

I was able to pick up a pair of Danskin Now tennis shoes for myself yesterday on clearance for $15, dd2 got 3 pairs of shorts & a dress for $18 total, poor dd1 she got nothing. She had tried on some shorts which I said they looked tight, she argued they weren't so I said "okay but I don't want to hear in a month you have no shorts that fit" and she put them back, LOL. They didn't have the next size up in what she wanted so the search continues.

woldn't you konw, the one time I don't hit copy before sending I lose my post!

My neighbor gets her colorful t shirts at Michael's craft store when they go on sale, they are $2.50 or less then. She wears them as her daily 'uniform' and she looks nice.

My frugal today is using one of my precious accumulated sick days to get better and be more productive at work tomorrow. Today I don't think I could focus with this sinus and throat infection.

Tonight is a dinner at Kelly's for grandpa's birthday, the frugal is the $21 dollar special they have for an early bird. We should ask for the senior discount for them also. Just a few more years and we'll qualify for it!

WE shared the cost of a new television for them for a gift.

Yep, I have all that stash but it's just enough for the two of us and everything I listed as suggestions dh said "blah". Brandy put in a extra at least 2 hours yesterday so guess it was worth the $8 for her meal. Back on the frugal train today, blah yesterday is what will be served for tonights meal.. meatloaf, mashed potatoes, sweet corn and cole slaw. Oh and I'm not sure if I mentioned it but the yogurt maker was only $2.99. And I will be using powdered milk instead of reg. milk not sure what the cost is as I can't remember what I paid for the powdered milk we rarely use milk except for cooking.

Roberta

I need to mow too.. am going to get out there about 9am maybe a little sooner to do the back yard, dh did the front yard a cpl. days ago before it started getting so hot. Another 90's day here with a chance of storms this afternoon. For now the AC is off, have the fans out and will try to run those till late this afternoon.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it as it's just been crazy around here but I bought a food dehydrator the other day for $8.99 it's a Waring brand, lower watts than the newer models but am anxious to start dehydrating fruits, will be watching for good buys like a week ago when I found pineapples for 99 cents. It was interesting reading the booklet, it says you can dehydrate 52 tomatoes and fit them in one quart jar. Wow! I have the food sealer Tilia and the attachments so I can seal the jars. I'm hoping we'll get alot of hot peppers this summer that I can dehydrate.

Has anyone used anything besides a yogurt maker for making yogurt? I had read years ago and found a site referencing it on how to make yogurt in a thermos. The only thing that sort of puzzles me is they say to use a wide mouth thermos and I've never seen a glass lined thermos in a wide mouth, so I'm assuming they mean the newer plastic lined ones???
