Pinkie Winky camping fun

We are renting a lean-to this summer again. I'm looking for some fresh ideas of the kids cooking or kid friendly camp cooking. Also some fresh ideas for fun. Keep in mind we go every year, so we do the usual bug safaris, hiking, etc. Although I welcome any tips you may have that are unusual and not common. I have 3 boys (7,5,3) and an infant girl.

A fun for the kids breakfast idea is Omelets in a Bag. Start a large pot of water boiling. For each person you will need 1 zip lock bag. Crack egg (1 - 3) into each bag. Break the yolk, squeeze most of the air out and zip the bag. Let the kids moosh the bag to mix up the egg. Open carefully and let them add what ever they want in their omelet (cheese, onion, bacon,etc.). Moosh up again. Drop the bags into the boiling water and cook till the egg is set. Carefully remove from the water and let cool slightly. They can even eat out of the bag.

My kids loved tinfoil dinners when we were camping. You just give them each a large piece of heavy duty aluminum foil and then put two pieces of bacon on the sheet of foil and then top with grated carrots and potatoes and then pat a thin layer of raw lean ground beef on top and onion slices (optional) and then top with two more pieces of bacon. Bring the ends of the foil up and roll to seal and then repeat this on the two ends. Do the same with a second layer of foil. Put the dinner right into the fire. You will know when it is done because you will hear the bacon sizzling. Eat it right out of the foil. No dishes!

What great ideas

Everyone has such great ideas, thanks. This was my first time at this site and I am pretty impressed. In the meantime I went on to FamilyFun website and Gorp and found a few recipes and a packing list that may come in hand, I'll have to compare it to mine and combine them. If you haven't check them out. I still have yet to go to the site recommended above, I'll try again today. With 4 children my time on the computer is limited, but it's my only link some days to the adult world it seems(I'm sure you all relate).

Again thanks and I'll contine to monitor to see what else comes in the omlet idea sounds like the kids would enjoy as well as the cool idea about bacon sizzling being our signal the foil dinner is done. I also read further up about the cherry cobbler that sounds pretty good and may just try that here on our grill. I haven't done much dutch oven cooking but would like to experiment with it.

This summer Vermont 4H is offering a weekend family camping trip. They rented out the entire campground. They are offering the kids workshops such as; archery, stick furniture building, dutch oven cooking, tracking, fishing, kyaking and canoeing, hiking 101, nature crafts, and more. My family is seperating for the classes that way we can come back together and teach the other half. As long as one parent is with their child/children we could do that. There are 3 workshop times scheduled and I couldn't just choose 3 so this way we'll get 6.
Keep the great ideas coming!!!

I was told by a mom who camps with her kids alot to bring lots of things for them to do. Crafts, games, treasure hunt. That is what I am doing next time. I am sure that this is a little late, but I just found this topic.

When we have went camping I pack a little tote for each kid for in the car with stuff like Hotwheels, Gameboys, small dolls, small animals, etc. These totes are only for the ride there and back.

For while we are there we pack baseball equipment, frisbees, super soakers, trucks, bikes, color books & crayons, and more. For baseball when the kids were small, we would use a cone for the tee. You can use the frisbees to play frisbee golf. Go on a scavenger hunt. Take some white material or paper and have your kids make a crest for "their" area. My husband is Native American and when he has taken our boys camping (the girls were too little), they made things that represent his people. They painted sticks however they wanted and decorated them with feathers and string.

I'm running out of ideas right now but I'm sure I will be back with more later.

walking sticks

Does your husband or have you made walking sticks before? Do they just strip the bark or shave them or??? I'd like to make some cool walking sticks with them this year. They are in scouts and it is actually in their books for electives but doesn't give much for guidance. I'd love any ideas.

Thanks Brenda

The ones he made were talking sticks (I finally got a chance to ask him). They peeled the bark off and then painted different colored rings around them.

Regarding the walking sticks--my husband says that you peel the bark off and let them dry and that's it. If you want to decorate them you can but he didn't give any specifics.

Wanted to say first welcome. I noticed most of you are new to FC. I think you will love it here.

We really enjoy tent camping.

I appreciate the omlet in a bag idea too!

Pam you have alot of outdoor knowlege don't you. Anything you learned from re-enacting you could share with us?

Regarding walking sticks... I became partial to them while I had my brownie troop. I like the fact you are able to personalize them. Makes a great craft with kids!
