Last summer, we went on two family camping trips with our Cub Scout pack.
The first time, we were using our tent which had not been used for around 10 years. The first night was fine, although the other campers were noisy so I didn't get much sleep. The next evening, my husband left for the night to go to a high school reunion and I stayed with the kids and other scouts. About 15 minutes after he left, it began to lightening and rain...and rain...and rain...and rain. All 75 kids and their adults were huddled under a fairly small pavilion that also housed all of the cooking equipment which was being used to make dinner - not the safest situation. After an hour, I ran across the lake that had formed outside the pavilion to our tent. Pillows, sleeping bags, clothes - all wet! At that point, I threw in the towel - literally. I grabbed all necessities, threw them into the trash bags that we had miraculously brought, and ran for the hills - or the car, which was 1/4 mile away. I was so afraid of the lightening! About an hour after we left, the park ranger advised the other campers that they had to leave due to the weather. We had packed up in the daylight - they had to pack in the dark!
The second trip, it also rained (do we see a pattern here?). This time, we had a new tent that did NOT leak. But, we placed it in the one spot in the campsite where the water puddled. So, when we woke up in the morning after a night of rain, we were sleeping on a waterbed in the middle of a mini-lake! The kids loved it - they put their hands down on the floor of tent and the tent floor rippled like waves!
We are planning more family Scout camping this summer - but I am NOT going if the forecast is rain!!
