Question Easy Frugal Camping Treats

Okay I am counting down the days til our Big Memorial Day Camping trip. I am looking for some really Simple treats to take along that won't break the bank. I am planning to take a lot of food from my freezer and pantry so I won't have to spend a lot of $$$$.

In addition to planned meals I am planning to take the following treats:

Homemade rice krispie treats

Homemade Babe Ruth Bars

Fresh Fruit

Any other good ideas? Thanks!

snacks to take along for camping

hello. here is a few ideas. hope they help.

popcorn-with pan to pop it in, of course.top with powdered cheddar cheese or parmesan for something different

corn or flour tortillas-season w/ cinnamom sugar or seasoning salt
or stuff with mini marshmallows and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar-makes a yummy dessert tortilla

apples to cook over campfire-add butter, cinnamon sugar, etc. after removing core and cover with foil.

can also cook pineapple slices, or make fruit kabobs over campfire.
pineapple chunks-apples-bananas-coconut, etc.

of course-smores

homemade trail mix-dried fruits, sunflower seeds, nuts, carob covered raisins, etc.

pita bread-onion flavored(YUM)-use butter spray or olive oil-sprinkle on powdered parmesan cheese-warm over fire.

make rice krispies treats over the campfire

enjoy. dont forget the bug repellant-tea tree oil mixed with water in a sprayer works great!!!

have fun!!!!
sincerely-sheila ann anderson

I treat or actually food that we like is those biscuits in a can. If you buy the Pillsbury grand biscuits they are a little bigger and are nicer but the regular works well also. Anyways, get those biscuits and cut them in half so you basically have two. Then put a little butter in your pan and cook them. They will fluff up and since you used butter to cook them you don't need anything else but maybe homemade jelly/jam.

Little kids like what I term "gorp". It's just different cold cereals put together like fruit loops, cheerios, apple jacks and the like. I use store brands. Then add marshamallows, pretzel sticks. It is a sweet treat.

When I was young we made banana boats also. Peel 1 or 2 sections down on a banana but don't take it off. Cut into the banan a little a place a little square of chocolate bar. Like the ones used for smores. Cover back up with peel and then wrap in foil. Put on coals for a few minutes until chocolate melts. It's kinda the reverse of a frozen banana with chocolate on it. Really good.

good luck
Kris

camping treats

When we go camping we also take along alot of snacks. Along with the sweets I like to make a big batch of chex mix. Sometimes I like to just lay in the hammock(if we are lucky enough to find 2 trees together) with a good book and something salty instead of so much sweet stuff. Although your Baby Ruth bars sound really good. If you have time after your trip I would love to have the recipe. Have fun and dont forget the insect repellant.

My crew always loved no bake oatmeal cookies when we went to the lake or camped out. The only thing is that they crumble if they get jostled around a lot.....but yummmmmmmyyyyy!

Camping Snacks

Hi Kim,

When I take the kids camping (haven't in a while) or to the beach or on a trip, the one snack they always want is simple and does not cost a bunch for as much as it makes.

I always make up a batch of Chex Mix (kids call it Nuts and Bolts). It's simple to make and makes a lot. You can find the recipe on the back of a Cherrios or Chex cereal box.

Because cereals are so expensive nowdays, I use off-brand or store brand cereals and they taste just as good as the name brand. Also, because all of us like spicey foods, I always add just a bit more Worcestershire sauce and garlic salt.

This is a very ecomonical and tasty snack that just about everyone seems to like. It needs no refrigeration and is very easy to store.

Happy Camping!

Barb

Hi,When we go camping, we do a lot of outdoor cooking, and there are great snacks to make over the campfires. If you know a girl scout, ask her. The GS USA has lots of campfire snacks.

Buy a pie iron, these can be filled with bread and any filling your family enjoys, from pizza to apple pie.

If you can find a used (otherwise quite expensive) dutch oven, you can make great cobblers !

Angels on horseback are marshmallows dipped in condensed milk, rolled in coconut and toasted over the fire.

If you need more, let me know !

A treat from a regular smores is using the nestle crunch bars or the pieces this adds a crunch to an allready great treat!

An easy not sweet is the flour tortillas spread with some salsa and cheese like a quesdella (spelling), My daughter likes these bec I make her her own with one tortilla and fold in half then when done cut in half and its easy to pick up and eat. Of course the rest of us like veggies in ours green pepper, scallion, tomatoe ect. Tortillas are good with apple/cinnamon/sugar (my father inlaw would add a sharp cheese in as well) in them just slice your apple very thin add some sugar and cinnamon and heat. These can be done on the grill or in one of those burger/dog cookers that you can turn?

Jiffy pop popcorn is perfect for the campfire but we have an old fashion pop corn popper made of the wire? This is great bec you can watch the popcorn pop the kids fight over who gets to do it. Lucky us an Aunt found a second popper at a yard sale and now they each do their own!

If you dont have it allready get some foil for burns just in case. Walmart sometimes carries it in the pharmacy section sometimes you have to ask the pharmacy to order it. Foil comes as a spray (the best) or an ointment (sp). Great for sunburns or heat burns. Spray it on and it cools right away and if you get it on within minutes NO blisters. Thats my camping advice!
have so much fun and Id love that baby ruth recipe to!

When we camp I usually make mini muffins or a sweat bread (like banana) to take along. Sometimes I will make a batch of cookies and those are our sweat treats.

I don't know if you camp tent or camper, but we use a camper so it is much easier to cook over the stove than over the camp fire. (I think so anyway) We have foods that we would eat at home like spaghetti, tacos, etc. Of course, we still like to eat the traditional hamburgers and also my 4 1/2 year old loves to roast hot dogs over the fire.

We just bought a camper this year and have really been enjoying it so far. We used to have a fold down camper, but that was a pain. We bought a regular travel trailer this time around and love it! Our boys are 15 months and 4-1/2 and both love the outdoors.

Hope you have a good trip this holiday weekend! We stay home on holiday weekends because all the campgrounds are always so full and noisy! We are going next weekend though....can't wait!

I would also love that baby ruth recipe...sounds great!
