For right now, I would say a campground. When our youngest gets older, definitely hills or woods. I love the peace & quiet of the woods. Our youngest is only 2 right now, though & I want to wait till he's older before we take him out on a real camping trip.
Dh and I are campground people. I dont think we would do to good in the hills of nowhere! I crack up just thinking about it!
We hope to do some camping this summer we have a couple parks we really want to check out. We have only camped once since ds1 came along. Of course it stormed and he literaly was scared to death of his own shawdow. So hoping for a dry weekend for ds2 first time out!

As a kid, I hated camping because of the rain. It rained almost every time we camped. My tent would always fill up with water. Even when it didn't rain there was 1-2 in. of water in the tent when I woke up. Once it rained so much that the tent my sis & I were in started sliding down a hill. Not long after that we stopped camping. We'd set up our tent in the backyard, but stopped going to campgrounds. For some reason, it never rained when I camped in the backyard.
I like flush toilets and I like the woods. Mostly we have camped in well appointed state run campgrounds. I think hills camping would mean backpacking and tenting. Hmmm.

When my children were growing up, we always were to the mountains and camped in remote areas. Now, we stay at campsite in the National Parks in the mountains. There are rarely any people there as we usually go during a weekday.
I have heard that National Parks are really nice like you said. I know there is a pass available too for something like $50 but is that for a family or for a single person?
