You will love it!
I've been to Puerta Plata on the north coast. We stayed at Jack Tar (all inclusive).
This was about 20 years ago so I bet things have only improved.
The snorkling is great if you have a chance. If you've never visited the Caribbean or especially D.R. prepare yourself. This island was quite poverty stricken. Tours were only given in groups and we were instructed to NEVER accept a "free" gift from beggars or anyone else. They will follow you everywhere until you pay them off. At the time I was a high school senior and quite shocked. Things are probably more commercial now though...
The landscape, scenery, nature, general culture, cuisine etc. is very memorable. I would love to go back again some time.
