Found some more free stuff!!
My Dh found a great table in the trash this week. It is a table that you would place along the back of a couch or in a foyer....along that line anyway. It is older but in great shape with a drawer in the top and a shelf underneath. The company's name is on the bottom of the drawer...."St. John's Gables" in Ohio but Ive had no luck finding any info. on them. It needs a coat of paint but otherwise its great!! He also found a small wooden plant stand for me too!
Yesterday we were drivng through a housing developement that is building more new homes. We drove up to a dumster FULL of unused building materials!! We got 6 2x4,2x6 & 2x8 boards, stove pipe ( we just bought this for our dryer vent and it cost us about $20. ) and 3 10 ft pieces of metal angles. I couldnt believe that they were throwing this stuff away. Neither could my husband because he got out in broad daylight with people around to get it!! He has more nerve than I do,LOL!!
We are going back tomorrow to see what else has been thrown away. Wish us luck!!
All right for you both! As it's just me and the kids now I'm going to be doing some dumpster drive-by's tonight to see what everyone's left at the curb.
ajrsmom, you are so lucky to have a husband that does not mind "dumster diving"!! I wish my dh would "dd". We have a beautiful -large deck, but can only use it in the evening over the summers, because the sun is entirely too hot and hits it from sunrise, until almost sunset. I know that if DH would dumster dive we could get the materials for free to put a roof over it. I could do it myself but he won't tell me what all we need to make a roof!!!
Lisa good luck with your treasure searching!!!!

I've been tempted to get building materials from those sites too...
You seem to be getting all the good stuff...
I did have a guy who would dump wood, tiles, etc. into the dumpster next to my old house. I would go and get the wood out. Shoot, wood is expensive and this guy is throwing it away. Of course my neighbors were in shock! They just thought the worst of us because I got a few other items thrown out from teens who got evicted-(all of the time)-and I would keep what I could. Man, they would say, that's the lady that was digging in the garbage! So, I stopped, but I once furnished an entire home off of roadside finds when I was 19! If people only knew that most thrift stores get paid for their 'garbage', maybe they would sell it or reuse it instead of just throwing out the good stuff...
Well gang, no luck garbage picking. There was a dumpster down my mom's block but it was absolute utter junk, torn out plaster, nothing that could be saved from what I could tell. They did have some great railroad ties but I don't have a pick up truck. I told my son (16 yrs old) that we need to get two vehicles, one car and one old pick up, just for that type of occasion - LOL!
I plan on garbage picking the next town over tomorrow. I hope I find at least a chair, like an old desk chair or kitchen chair. We have four and need five. The 16 yr old is sitting in a broken lawn chair for dinner at the table!

Lisa, Hang in there, I was going through a big dry spell before finding this cart. Im hoping that Ill get lucky again.
Mom2-4, Ive been married almost 8 yrs. and for the first few he wouldnt consider it but now for some reason he is on it before I am. I think that it took seeing that I really could sell this stuff to make him believe. I once sold 7 very used ( meaning not too pretty but in good shape) pairs of his Levi's to a guy that worked construction. I got $25 for them. The guy was so happy with them! He said that he gets them dirty anyway so he didnt really care what they looked like, just that they were in decent shape. Just think, one new pair cost more than that! And to think that my DH was going to throw them out!! Must say that this was during the first year of marriage, LOL!! He knows better now!! ;-)
That does not surprise me!!! Especially since the guy you sold them to is in construction!! My DH would have also bought them (DH works construction). Levi's are made much better and last way longer than any other brand of jeans. And, believe me it does not matter what jeans look like as long as they don't have holes in them, particularly if it is concrete construction. One day, pouring concrete will make a brand new pair of jeans look like ancient jeans!!!!
Maybe, I should start to trash pick small stuff!!! My DS, loves to go through the park and trash pick, maybe if I take him along in the evening to pick up my work, he would help me. Then maybe I could get everyone else started.(family)

I got lucky this morning!
On my way to drop off newspapers to the animal shelter......someone had thrown out a black wood folding screen. This screen holds 4 - 8x10 pics on each side. It was missing all but 2 of the panes of glass, but I'm sure I have a few strays around here!
They also had a black wrought iron vanity table in bad shape, but i took the arched mirror frame off of it. It'll look nice in my entryway......woo hoo!!!!!

ajrsmom,
The city i live in is BOOMING with new construction! I always look for scraps of materials at new home sites that I can use.
I saw the sod guys last week doing a yard, and asked for 1 piece...the guy gave me 10!!!! He said it was extra from that job!
Now my few bare spots in the yard are filled in!
