Thanks once again Donna Marie for the cute craft idea. I am going to adapt this one for my daycare by using cut of toilet rolls and using a paper scarcrow they will decorate.

Decorative Thanksgiving Crafts

Dishtowel Scarecrow
Isn't he the sweetest! This darling harvest scarecrow is simple to assemble and easy on the pocketbook. What a great way to recycle those dish towels!

Materials:

1 dishtowel
1 matching dishcloth
1/4-inch dia. Wood dowel, 11-inches long
Beige felt
Raffia
Burlap or straw hat
Red and black permanent makers
Glue gun
Scissors

Instructions:

Arms
Lay washcloth out flat. Place several strands of raffia along one end. Place the wooden dowel over the raffia (see fig. 1). Starting on the side you placed the raffia and dowel, begin rolling the washcloth, inclosing the raffia and dowel in the center. Tie a piece of raffia around dishcloth 1-inch from each end (see fig. 2). Trim the raffia so it hangs out about 1 1/2 inches on each end of the dishcloth. Set arms aside.

Head
Cut a 7 1/2? x 2 1/2? piece of beige felt. Clip short ends so they have a jagged look. Fold in half widthwise and using the markers draw a face about 1-inch down from fold. Set head aside.

Body
Fan fold the dishtowel lengthwise (refer to fig. 1 of the angel towel on Crafter's Community, use your back button to return). Fold in center and place the folded felt head over fold in towel (see fig. 3). Tie a length of raffia just under the scarecrow face, around the felt and towel, to form the head. Slide arms between the folded towel up to the neck. Tie a length of raffia under arms for waist. Separate the two sections of the towel below the waist to form legs (see fig. 4). Tie a length of raffia 1-inch from the bottom of each leg.

Finish
Create hair by tying a bunch of raffia in the center (see fig. 5). Using a glue gun, glue center of raffia bunch to the top of the scarecrow head. Spread raffia down around the head and glue hat onto head over raffia. Trim the hair if needed.

Mr. Tom Turkey

This plump little turkey will be the center of attention on your table this year! Make one for your table or as a gift for your host & hostess.

Materials:

10" x 14" piece of rust fabric (for body and arms)
3" x 6 1/2" piece of light tan fabric (for wings)
3" x 4" piece of brown felt (for collar)
8 1/2" x 13" piece of dark rust print cotton fabric (for tail)
6 1/2" x 8" piece of Pellon fleece
Two scrap pieces of gold fabric fused together or a small piece of light weight cardboard and gold acrylic paint (for beak)
3/4 cup birdseed, rice or lentils
1/2 oz polyester fiberfill
1 1/2"-diameter wooden ball (for head)
Dark brown permanent marker, pink permanent marker
7"-long piece of 3/8"-wide rust satin ribbon (for bow); 5 1/2"-long piece of 3/16"-wide rust satin ribbon (for hat)
Three 4"-long feathers (optional)
2 1/2"-diameter black felt hat

You will also need:

scissors
pencil
carpet thread (optional)
threads to match fabrics
large-eye sewing needle
small plastic bag and twist tie
straight pins
glue gun
Patterns

Directions: (1/4" seams allowed)

Cutting
Fold rust fabric in half lengthwise; using full-size pattern, cut one body piece from one end of fabric. Unfold remaining rust fabric and fold lengthwise; cut one arms piece from fabric. Cut four wing pieces from light tan print fabric; cut one collar piece from brown felt; cut two tail pieces from dark rust print fabric; cut one tail piece from Pellon fleece. Cut one beak piece from fused gold fabric or from lightweight cardboard. If using cardboard, paint beak with gold acrylic paint. Transfer dots to right side of wing pieces and arms piece. Transfer dotted lines to right side of one tail piece.

Body
Using carpet thread or 4 strands of regular thread, hand-stitch large gathering stitches around body piece 1/4" from edge. Fill small plastic bag with birdseed, rice or lentils, secure top of bag with twist tie, then place bag in center of wrong side of body piece. Pull ends of thread to gather fabric to make a pouch. Stuff pouch around plastic bag with fiberfill. Tightly pull ends of thread to gather fabric around fiberfill, forming a ball; knot thread ends close to top of ball, forming the body.

Wings and Arms
Pin two wing pieces with right sides together and edges even; machine-stitch along edges, leaving straight side open. Trim seams; turn right side out; press. Repeat with two remaining wing pieces. Matching dots on each wing to corresponding dots on right side of arms piece, pin wings to arms piece with straight edges aligned. Fold down top of arms piece so that wings are inside arms piece. Machine-stitch open sides of arms piece, leaving opening at middle of long side for turning. Trim seams; turn right side out; press. Stuff arms firmly with fiberfill; hand-stitch opening closed. Center arms seam side down on top of body pouch; glue or mud-stitch in place.

Collar and Head
Center collar right side up on top of arms; glue in place. Center wooden ball on top of collar and glue in place for head. Referring to photo, use dark brown permanent marker to make two dots or eyes; use pink permanent marker to make rosy cheeks. Glue beak in place. Tie 3/8"-wide satin ribbon in a bow; glue to collar beneath chin.

Tail
Lay fabric tail pieces with right sides together on top of fleece tail piece; pin all layers. Machine-stitch around outside edges through all three layers, leaving straight edge open. Trim seams; turn right side out. Machine-stitch along dotted lines through all layers. Turn under edges of opening; hand-stitch closed. If desired, glue feathers to one
side of tail. Glue tail to body with feather side of tail against back of body and bottom of tail even with bottom of wings.

Hat
Glue 3/16" wide satin ribbon around base of hat crown. Place hat on head and glue in place.

take a look at this site... scroll way down to the bottom.. I made this pumpkin but I did not use tissue paper.. I used fabric and silk leaves and a plastic stem.. This one is easy and quick to make.. also looks great as a centerpiece on the table.. and.. because most crafters have the supplies handy its very FRUGAL ! ( my favorite kind of project !)

The one I did is attatched to this message. I think it looks better with fabric.

Lacy leaves

Lacy LeavesFrom the magazine, Holiday CelebrationsA pre-Thanksgiving trip to collect leaves to use as patterns is part of the appeal of this project. Scatter the graceful leaves around a pumpkin to create a seasonal centerpiece.

What You Need:http://images.meredith.com/bhg/temps/shell/shim.gifhttp://images.meredith.com/bhg/images/09/a_12758482.jpg

Golden leaves based on the
real thing.http://images.meredith.com/bhg/temps/shell/shim.gif
  • Real leaves (oak and maple leaves have wonderful shapes)
  • Window screen (available by the foot at hardware stores); approximately 6 square inches for each leaf you wish to make
  • Newspaper
  • Gold spray paint
  • White typing paper
  • Permanent black marker
  • Old scissors (cutting metal screening may dull your favorite scissors)
  • Gold, copper, or bronze paint pen (often used for fabric painting; available at fabric, discount, and crafts stores)
Instructions:http://images.meredith.com/bhg/temps/shell/shim.gifhttp://images.meredith.com/bhg/images/09/a_12758483.jpg

http://images.meredith.com/bhg/temps/shell/shim.gif1. Collect your favorite fall leaves. Pick shapes that have some cleanly formed edges.

2. Cut and paint the window screen. Cut the screen a little larger than the leaf. Lay the screen on some newspaper and spray the screen gold. Let it dry and paint it on the other side. Let the paint dry thoroughly.

3. Transfer leaf shape onto screen. Lay the leaf on the piece of white paper and put the painted window screen over the leaf. Draw around the leaf with the permanent marker. Add the veins of the leaf with marker. (See Photo 1.)

4. Cut out the leaf shape using old scissors. (See Photo 2.)

5. Use the paint pen to edge the leaf and trace over the veins. (See Photo 3.) Let the paint dry. Bend the leaf slightly to make it look real.

Turket Table Decoration

Here is a simple Turkey decoration I made with my Storytime kids last year.

Need:
Toilet Tissue roll cut in half
Construction paper or Craft foam in following colors--
Brown, Tan, Orange, Yellow, Red, White
Wiggles eyes--opt.
Glue
Staples

Using one half of the Toilet tissue roll, measure and cut a strip of brown construction paper to cover the roll. Glue to roll.
Using either tan or brown paper make a turkey head-- see attachment. Make a face using either wiggle eyes or white paper circle with black eyeballs drawn in, red teardrop shape for waddle and an orange triangle for beak. Glue to brown paper roll opposite the side with the seam. Let dry.
Have the child put their hand on an orange piece of paper with fingers open. Draw around and cut out. Repeat the process with a yellow piece of paper. Making sure you have a thumb sticking out from each side and put the two hands together making them slightly ascew so you can see the different color finger feathers. Use a small amount of glue to hold together.
Using either glue or staples attach the feather to the side of the roll with the seam. Becareful not to extend the feathers beyond the bottom of the roll or your turkey will not sit up.
To finish the turkey as a table decoration, cut a heart shape out of orange paper large for enough to sit the turkey on with a bit sticking out for feet. The round part of the heart is the front and the pointed end is in the back. Run a bead of glue around bottom of roll and sit on heart. Let dry.
If you do not put feet on your turkey it could be used as a napkin holder at your Thanksgiving table.
