Blondie, You have such a nice family...now that I met 3 of you already! You are all easy to chat with and down to earth. I bet you must all have a great time when you get together!
Glad you will be able to get out of the heat Blondie, it is suppose to be in the 90's here tomorrow. Crazy hey? It has been down to the 40-60's at night..brrr...put the winter bedspread on the bed. We also got a dumptruck load of firewood today! It is going to be busy here this weekend stacking and splitting wood. It is suppose to get colder here next week and the leaves are changing color.(just starting)
You are so right about being able to put more clothes on if you are too cool, and not being able to take off all when too hot. I told that to my dh when trying to talk him into moving back to Michigan, and since I'd tried so often, he began to get very upset with my efforts. He told me he is NEVER going back, so you can see what my fate is now. I told him if I ever won the lottery (LOL) that's the first thing I'd do. By the way tomorrow's lottery is worth 86 million. --Fat chance of getting it, so guess I'm stuck here.

I have to admit we do get some cooler weather in December (sometimes), January, and February, and I mean cooler than 75 degrees during the day. At night, though, we have had as low as 35 some winters, and that's when I put the comforter on the bed, open the windows (yet), and turn on my fan. I LOVE being able to snuggle up in the blankets, and still breathe fresh air. We do have the heat on during these times, if you can call it that. If you go outside, then come in, you feel heat, but if you stay in all the time, the "heat" feels like a cool breeze when it turns on. It isn't anything at all like I knew up home. It comes from the air conditioning unit outside the house. We do have to cover plants that will die from the cooler temps for a week or so.

Janet--sounds like your town is bigger than mine--we only have one traffic light lolol!! We can burn leaves, too, certain times of the year. Makes it a lot easier to compost them, lemme tell you!
I'm looking forward to a break in the weather--this hot and humid is driving me nuts since we don't have ac!! It got so chilly we took down the kids' pool and then it got hot again. I think someone forgot to tell Mother Nature it's September in Michigan!
I agree with you MrsManiac, It has been crazy summer here too! We took our window a/c out about 1 month ago and who would know we would have a weekend of 96degrees????
It cooled off at night so you could sleep under the covers.
I actually hate a/c...it is noisy and makes the electric meter spin! way too fast! lol
I am looking forward to fall and I love to rake leaves!
Location: MI for now but moving to Oregon in May of 2003

Another Michiganian or is that Michigander?
I'm Hippie and I live in Roseville about 4 miles from Lake St. Clair. We just moved here this past April but are moving to Oregon in May of 2003. I can understand most of you loving it here.. but living in the Detroit area stinks. Believe me.. I grew up in Berkley, MI but once I turned 21 I packed my stuff and moved to Vegas by myself. Never been there just wanted to go. There I met my husband and he's from L.A. Cali. He took a big chance and moved with me back here to MI 6 years ago... ever since I left and came back I've noticed a lot of not so good things about MI. There's nothing to do in the winters.. get's too cold!!! (VEGAS spoiled me!) the people in SE MI are so much different then the rest of the country. We DO have 20 acres up near Fife Lake (14 miles east of Kalkaska. It IS beautiful up there but if it weren't for the lack of jobs and all the darn show they get up there we'd probably try it. BUT I'm just not cut out for MI. Hubby and I don't seem to fit in here. We enjoy camping and fishing (which I know there is a lot of here) BUT we also want the mountains and the ocean. So Oregon seems the best place.. we get the green trees and grass of MI, the ocean, the mountains, the friendly people, lots of outdoor family things to do, VERY PET FRIENDLY, and the temps are a lot better then they are here.. average in Jan is 47 NO WIND CHILL FACTOR (well not much) and NO HUMIDITY (not as much as here at least!!!) NO MOSQUITOS which I'm pretty excited about! LOL
well that's my story... I do love MI and my family are here.. but I'm not happy here. I like MI for the beauty and I have only made ONE great friend here which I figure because i'm not like the people here.
Have any of you even been out west??? People always ask us why we would ever want to leave MI... and we ask them if they've even been OUT of MI and they say NO... enough said!!
My intention was NOT to make anyone mad but just to share MY story with other Michiganders.
Take care everyone and a wonderful day to you all!!!

I for one am not mad at you for not liking it here. Believe me, if I could talk dh into it, I'd move to a warmer climate! I don't like snow and I don't like cold, and neither does he, but his family is here so he doesn't want to move. Other than that--it's not too bad here, so long as you can cope with the humidity! It's tough when it gets so muggy you can't breathe, and every move you make makes you sweat! I like the four seasons, but I wish they weren't so drastic(too hot then too cold!).
Hi Hippie, I am not angry that you do not like Michigan, it is not for everyone. I live in the UP and I love it. People here are hard-working and honest. It is the only place where people help you if you get stranded or lost.
Our winters are a wee bit longer than I like and maybe that is because I am a gardener and long to work in the garden in early Spring, which is impossible with 3-6ft. snowbanks! lol
I have never been out West, but I have been out East and down South, and in the Midwest. I still like Michigan, our air here (UP) can't be beat. I love the fresh air and the wide open spaces.
Good Luck to you on your quest to find the perfect place to be happy.
[COLOR=purple] ;-) Hi Janet, WOW, another michigander!!!!where in the up do you live?? i used to go to escanaba in the summers every year for about 8 yrs. ameritech had yellow page work there at the time. now we go lthere in the winters to go ice fishing on little bay de noc. two yrs. ago we drove all the way with friends to marquette to see the ice sculptures! i just loved it there but oh boy........LOTS OF SNOW! we also went to copper harbor but couldn't get to our friends cabin as the snow was so high it blocked the entrance! i like you wish the summers were a little bit longer here too! i just love to garden and plant flowers and hate for the season to end. i'd love to hear more about you and your gardening.
have a wonderful day

Tootsweet, I live about 100 miles west of Mqt. and 50 miles south of Copper Harbor. I live in Houghton County. Home of Michigan Tech, we call our students here toots...are you related? lol
I grow a veggie garden every year, this year I only grew squash, potatos, green beans, lettuce, fancy varieties of lettuce, arugula, red lettuce, endive, etc. onions, roma tomatoes, and pumpkins for my DS. I also plant marigolds all around my garden to keep the bugs away. It really helps. I dry my own seeds for marigolds from the current crop...so next year I will have a ton of seeds to sprinkle around, like grass seed. I planted green beans but deer came in to nibble the plants..I also have 2 rabbits that live near my yard. They love to eat my gladiolas just when they are popping thru the ground, no flowers for me! I have zucchini and yellow squash coming out of my ears here...I have been given so much away because my freezer is full! I have 2 drawf apple trees that usually give me enough apples for 2 pies. I planted another apple tree this year...hopefully there will be enough for 3 pies! lol:p
I also plant herbs...cilantro, parsley, dill, garlic Just stuff I use alot of. I hope to increase my herb garden.
I also have a rose garden, flower boxes, flowering bushes, tulips, irises, sunflowers, and hostas, sun on the mountains, ferns, violets, wild strawberries, lupines, lily, so I keep busy watering, pruning, picking off dead heads, and landscaping. Every year I try to add to my yard. This is my summer hobby and alot of plants I bring in for the winter...vinca vines, coleus, ivy, and so on. So I feel like I still am gardening all winter.lol
I love working outside and it is wonderful to dig in the dirt!
