Sausage, Bean & Barley Soup

cat lover originally posted this recipe in What's for Dinner February 2009.

This recipe has won a Chef Guy!

Sausage, Bean and Barley Soup

16 oz turkey smoked sausage or kielbasa
5 cups water
1 15 1/2 oz can great northern beans, drained
1 14 1/2 oz can stewed tomatoes
1 medium onion, chopped
2 ribs celery, sliced
1/2 cup carrots, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup quick cooking barley
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp dried basil leaves

Cut sausage into 1/4" slices. Put sausage and remaining ingredients into a 5 qt dutch oven and bring to a boil. Cover and reduce heat ans simmer about 15 minutes or till the vegetables are tender. Makes 6 (1/2 cup) servings.

Made something like this last night was very good with the barley added. Used frozen bags of mixed vegetables, can of red kidney & white canneli beans, and fresh roma tomatoes.Think adding one sliced zucchini squash gave it a sweet taste. Did add more water as it started cooking since I used a 9qt pot like it soupy.
Cooked the sausage seperate but added some diced pieces to the dish when served.

This is a very tasty meal.
