Looking for Scout crafting and project ideas

Hello everyone,

I have been a Scout Troop leader for a year and am looking for crafts and projects the kids can do that help them learn also.

I have 5 in the my Troop. They are ages 11-17. One has ADHD, and 3 of them can only read at about a grade 3 or 4 level. It has been very challenging trying to do things with them.

They all love making crafts or useful items. I would like to make my program more fun for them.

I am looking for things that they can do that relate to nature, recycling, camping, map and compass, household safety, knots, cultural awareness, plays, agriculture, forestry, horticulture for examples.

If anyone has any ideas or websites that may be useful please let me know or if you would like to chat please feel free to contact me. I would love to hear from you.

Hi
I was a den leader and a Cubmaster for several years and I understand your challenge. I got ideas from our local scout shop where they had kits and idea books. I also went to the Boy Scout Council "Pow Wows" where I got a lot of ideas. There are also lots of books at the library on recycling, etc. The one I like is called "Trash To Treasure" You might want to check out the BSA website. Sorry I don't remember the address. Or use a search engine like Google. There are a lot of troop websites out there. Hope this helps. Barb <><

try the magazine "Pack-o-Fun" it is geared for kids and always has scouting ideas in it. i just started working at the "Y" summer camp and there are children just like you have there and at one point during the day we do a craft item, o maybe you could contact your local Y. we made homemade puff paint on friday, it's really cool! in a plastic cup add 1 partelmers glue, 1 part shaving cream, few drps of food coloring (if you want) and stir! we gave them contruction paper had them draw a picture and paint on the puff paint. as it dries it puffs up! hope this helps some.
hats off to you for what you are doing for these kids!!!!

Thank You Girls

Thank You for the ideas. Unfortunately I live about 100 miles to the closest Y and about 40 miles to the closest library but I will check them out when I get a chance to go that way.

I live in a village of only about 500 people and am a long way away from everything. I am so glad we got a computer this year. It has helped a great deal.

I will definately check out the magazine and website.

I find the Canadian Scout shops don't have as much information as we need. There are only a few crafts and they are for fun only.

I was supposed to be trained within the first year of being a leader but could not get any in my area. The closest training sessions where 100 miles from here. The course is 2 full days and could not afford the gas, training and babysitter to my 3 kids. This training wasn't even in my district. Our district wouldn't have training sessions. They just kept passing the responsibility to everyone else.
