Here's a great site for RV'ers who want wireless access: http://hotspots.wirelesstrips.com/

It lists hotspots at truck stops, campgrounds and rest stops. Then there are links to the websites of those that have websites. There are more than 1,600 locations in the U.S. listed.

Just nosey around, we don't camp anymore except here at home sometimes 1/4 mile away in our own cabin, but have often wondered~~~ so just seeing what everybody's answers were to that one.

My SIL doesn't do either when they camp in their fifth wheel, they said they want to get away from it all ! LOL

Thanks for the link. I hope to be moving again next year and will check this out when I know where I'll be moving to.

Happy to help. It's good for people planning vacations who have someone in the family who just can't stand to be away from the computer for more than a few hours

RVing with satellite receiver & cell phone internet access

Our motorhome came with a satellite dish mounted on the roof. So, we got rid of extended cable in the house and had DishNetwork installed. When we leave for an RV trip, we just move the dish receiver from the house to the motorhome. We kept basic cable in the house, too, in order to use Cox High Speed Internet while at home.

Currently, I use my cell phone for internet connection using Earlink as our ISP. Our cell phone company is Verizon Wireless. It's painfully slow (14.4k) but better than nothing and allows us to send and receive e-mail. In order to do this, I purchased a Data Connectivity Kit that plugs into my cell phone and into my computer. Please don't ask me how this works...I just know that it does. We looked into satellite internet, but at present it's very costly.

DH and I both have a laptop with wireless capabilities. We haven't had a chance to use WIFI yet, but are looking forward to staying at a campground soon that offers it.

Does your receiver from the house work then no matter where in the country you travel? I know the cards in them are programmed and just wondered if it is only programmed to pick up in the area where you home is based.

The satellite receiver will work anywhere in the country. The only thing that has to be changed is the GPS location of the satellite dish itself. Instructions on how to do that come with the motorhome dish. Satellite dishes are available for motorhomes that automatically find the satellite. But they are very pricey ($1,000.00 or more), so my DH does it manually. Like anything else, once a person searches for the satellite manually a few times, it's easy and no big deal.

We love it. Of course, if staying for an extended period of time at a campground that doesn't have cable, we're always certain to ask for a site that's out in the open...not under trees...as that can make it difficult (if not impossible) to lock onto the satellite.

What an amazing world we live in. :-)

Oh thanks! I knew that, but just wasn't aware I could still get my "satellite pkg" any where. Interesting to know.

KaAlb, thanks for the information. I couldn't do the slow method since I do so much research online. I wish I could afford the pricey stuff, but maybe someday!
