Uses for Toilet Paper or Paper Towel Tubes

Directions:
1. Before class cut small, 1/2-inch triangles from orange and brown construction paper. Each child will need one orange triangle and two brown triangles. If you don't have empty bathroom-tissue tubes, make 6-inch tubes from poster board.

2. Set out markers and glue sticks. Give each child a cardboard tube. Have children draw eyes on the top half of the tube. Mention to the children that they're going to make hoot owls.

3. Distribute the orange and brown construction paper triangles. Tell children to glue an orange triangle below the eyes for the beak then glue the bown triangles as ears.

4. Set out craft feathers. Show children how to glue craft feathers to the bottom half of a tube as chest feathers for an owl.

5. Let children tear wings from the paper grocery sacks then tape the wings to the owl. Now Ollie Owl is ready to sit, fly, and say wise things!

Crafty Tips:

With a few changes, the owl pattern may be adapted to use as Christmas angels or shepherds.
Use this craft idea with lessons about wisdom and understanding. Let the owl represent listening and patience.

This a neat project I will have my kids do, as they like to make crafts. They are always wanting to make something. Also their Grandmother collects things owl things. So she would like to get one of this I'm sure. I think you could also use a cardboard can, like a cappuchino can or such with a plastic lid on top or a coffee can to make a bigger owl. You can make various sizes that way I think. For Father's Day my kids covered a cardboard can with various cut photos of themselves and even colored the top lid and gave it to their Dad, my husband for him to use to hold various things. He loved it and the time they spent doing it. He used it everyday to hold his keys and such. The children have made the pencil/pen holder cans like were in this section too and they are still being used for that. One year I made for valentine's Day a set of heart flowers, using drinking straws, cut paper hearts and a put them in a can I covered with construction paper. My husband still has it today. One year the kids made plastic bottle vases and put sand and silk flowers in the bottles and covered the bottles with there own message for Dad. he loved it and still has them. One year they made him hand and footprint plates on paper plates we had and he hung them on the wall, they can be laminated too so they are really protected. also when they were younger we traced their hand outline on a sweatshirt and a also on a jacket for their Dad and put their names and such on it. The Hand prints were on the pockets of the jacket, as it was a zip jacket, he still has that jacket today. The Sweatshirt, he still has too. He treasures their gifts they make him. One year he and the kids made me a blue glass vase of silk flowers in floral foam and put lace on the outside of the vase edge at the top. It was a nice surprise and I still have it to treasure. Our whole family likes to craft things including my husband, besides buying some gifts and personlizing them.

It's not exactly a craft project but stuffed with dryer lint and some wax candle scrapings, they make nice firestarters.

They're also good for holding your cooking tongs in the drawer, so the tongs don't come open and tangle everything up in there.
