Question ISO NO STOVE/OVEN MEAL IDEAS

Hi everyone! We are a military family currently stationed in Germany. Man, has it been HOT here! There is no central air here either! The hottest part of the day seems to be dinnertime, so don't want to heat the house further by using the stove/oven!! Looking for meal ideas/suggestions. Crockpot/grill suggestions are welcome, but would like other ideas too!

Thanks in Advance!!

Our favorite meal when it is hot outside is a fresh fruit and veggie platter.
My daughter would love to go to Germany. She took 3 years of Gernman in high school and one semester in college.
I know you will find some wonderful dishes on FC. The people here are wonderful and supportive.

We live in the country and chose to not have any AC nor heat put in our house (we heat with a wood burning stove), and there are a few "warm" days, but nothing bad and it always cools down into the 60's at night. But on those days you don't want to cook either because of the heat or just don't feel like cooking; here is what we do.

In the summer I always have a huge bowl of potato salad, and coleslaw in the refrigerator and bowls of cut up melons, and any other fresh fruit that is on sale. Bags of cleaned and cut up veggies make a quick sandwich go with or to use with a dip for a snack. I alternate between tuna salad, chicken salad, cold cuts, cooked and refrigerated salmon patties( we reheat in the microwave). Then for veggies we usually pick what is ready in the garden ( or what you can get at the farmers market) and steam those (steaming is a short process so it doesn't heat the kitchen). You could precook what your family likes and also just heat per plate in the microwave and that doesn't heat up your kitchen. If we want baked goodies I usually bake at night; but since you are in Germany lucky you can go to the bakery and get all kinds of goodies!

We also do smoothies a lot for lunches and sometimes even breakfast. Homemade breakfast bars are good and they require no cooking or next to none.

Puddings and jello make good summertime desserts with a little cool whip on them.

I probably have some recipes if you would like just let me know! Enjoy Germany while you are there.

crockpot, sandwiches, fruit and deli trays that I do myself, micowave things to eat,
we live in Tx and it so hot here, and our a/c is broken so I can relate to the heat problems

in the morning we eat breakfast bars, cereal, pop tarts, and I also have a wonderul little sandwich maker that I can make homemade pop tarts in or grilled cheese sandwiches, etc.

so if you can get one of those I think that will help also get yourself a crockpot
as it helps cut down on the heat in the kitchen

If you have a freezer; You could make up some meat pockets and prebake then freeze and reheat in the microwave or wrap in foil and warm them up on the grill. Also, you could have meat patties and vegtables sliced and wrapped with foil and grilled over the grill. That way everybody gets their own package for dinner. These could be frozen ahead of time too.

Meat pockets could be: Sloppy Joes, Ham and Cheese, Pizza stuffing in a bread pocket, Cheese, green peppers, onions and beef for Philly beef style, and the cabbage, onion and beef.
Through in a salad or fruit and the meal is complete.

Vegetable Packets

8 small leeks
4 med. zucchini
8 med. tomatoes
1/4 cup chopped fresh basil OR 2 tbls. dried
1/2 cup apple cider
1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. black pepper

Prepare the grill . Cut 4-12 inch squares of foil. Trim off and discard the tough green tops and roots from the leeks. Split leeks lengthwise and rinse thoroughly under cold water to remove all the grit. Remove ends from zucchini and quarter lengthwise. Blanch tomatoes for 30 seconds, then transfer to a colander and cool under running water. Peel tomatoes, cut crosswise in half and gently squeeze to remove the seeds. Cut the tomatoes into quarters. Divide the vegetables evenly among the foil squares and sprinkle each portion with basil and cider. Fold the edges of the foil together and crimp. Place packets on the grill and cook for 15 - 20 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Before serving, season with desired amount of salt and pepper.

Hope this helps you some.
Vicky

We love chef salad, or salad bar. Sounds like what it is. Cold cut sandwiches with grapes and chips, tuna salad, chicken salad, anything like that. Salad bar has to be our favorite summer meal though!
