We just bought a shredder not too long ago. We only paid $35 - $40 dollars for it because we don't use it for more than shredding bills and personal papers at home. It's an Aurora and we bought it at Staples. So far it's working just fine.
Did you know that you are supposed to oil a paper shredder? Directions are included on how to do it. We didn't know that and I think that's why we ruined the motor in our last machine.
Are you looking for a simple shredder or one that is more substantial and can take on bigger jobs?

I forget who gave the tip on how to oil a shredder in Tips and something thread but I think they said to oil two sheets of paper, let it soak into the paper and then run the paper through the shredder.
I guess I don't know how much shredding. For bills and mail I collect about a grocery bag once a month. If I were to make mulch it would be much more, instead of recycling for free newspapers that I've paid for, then I would need a shredder that could handle about 4 inches thick of newspaper once a week (but not all at once!)
We had one at work that would do a CD. It was a Fellowes.

Yep, that is what we did to oil ours. You have to use a light colored oil like cooking oil --nothing dark.

I have a fellowes too. The biggest cause of paper jams is having a basket too small and not emptying it out before it gets to the top. I usually try to get a large pail since the top is adjustable and I can put a plastic bag inside. I think using the baby oil is a good idea on the paper to oil the machine blades every so often. I make sure there are no staples or thin plastic openings on the envelopes.
I have had this shredder a long time but it does the job. The newer ones are awesome and expensive. Will keep an eye out for a good sale to buy a new one.

We have a small one.. we got it at Walmart. I don't know what brand it is, but we just shred up stuff that we don't need any more. I don't get the newspaper so it's only ads & small papers that I shred. I didn't know about the oiling it either.. thanks for posting that tip. This one has been in use for about a year. I have a large waste basket & put a trash bag in it & shred the paper in there. Then all I have to do is take the bag out & put a new one in when it gets full. Ours is adjustable so it fits across the waste basket. Once in a while ours will jam , but it has a reverse button & I just reverse the paper so it comes out & then clean the little shreds that get caught in the blades & it works fine again. I'll use the oil tip & see if it works better.
I was thinking of using the shredded paper in my garden. It will conserve moisture for the vegetable garden and when wet will not blow away. Covering it with soil and layering will help too.
Hate to throw out all that free mulch.
Has anyone been using it in their gardens?
