stay at home dogs

I titled this funny... But I have 2 dogs. They are older. (poodles) Anyways they are used to having us gone during the day. My husband used to come home at noon to let them out to poddy. But his schedule has changed and there is no way I can come home to let them out (to far from work)
They are having accidents on the carpet. I love my dogs but not happy about the peeing on the carpet. (which I understand you can only cross your legs only so long) Does anybody have any ideas what to do....I cant have a doggy door because the cat will get out. I dont have neighbors that can let them out at noon. .....Looking for some wonderful ideas... Thanks

Sinatra, I have 2 chihuahuas. I am away at school for many hours at a time for 3 days a week. I put out potty paper and limit where they can go. I also give them plenty of toys, chew-chew's, and anything else that might keep them busy. When I first got my young one, I had to potty train him. I first placed wee wee pads all over my place. Then, once I discovered where he prefered to go potty, I removed the rest and left the wee wee pads in the place where the boys go potty. You can also put out plastic and cheap carpet throws over the good carpet too. That seems to help my babies while I am away so that they have a place to go potty when I am gone and things to do when they get bored until I get home.

We have a small 4 room house so we didn't have alot of options. What we did was cover our small hall area with linoleum (thick) tacked it down and we cover it with layers of newspapers. We are away from home generally 12 hours out of the day when you factor in travel time and I don't think it's fair to expect my dogs to hold it that long. They also go potty in the am outside and again when we get home. I do have problems with the youngest on the carpet so we no longer have carpet, just throw rugs and alot of tolerance. Our dogs are our world and we understand when they have accidents and don't get mad or yell at them. Just wash the rugs and put down fresh. As they get older we will be dealing with continence issues so it won't be a big surprise.

stay at home dogs

My son has two dogs and cant come home eather, so he puts them in one room and puts paper down, once thay get used to going on the paper then he will try to let them out again. my Daughter has a dog with a big yard so she has them out side in the summer and has a dog housefor shelter. my sister-in-law trained her dog to go to the cat box so one or the other may work. I found a site that shows how to litterbox train your dog. http://www.kturby.com/litter/litter.htm It seems interesting. There are several other sites too.
http://doggiebidet.com/index.php?section=1

When I was in middle school, there was a blind teacher with a seeing eye dog that could only go to the bathroom on grass. Since there was no grass near the classroom, the school planted a 4 X 4 box of grass. I was amazed that the dog had been trained to only go on grass.

I hope this helps,

K

Litter training older dogs is much more difficult than training puppies. You need to be there constantly for a least several days and work intensely with them. For your older dogs, if you don't have the intense time to put in to attempting the litter training, you probably will do best to confine them to a tiles or linoleumed area with paper or pee pads down on it.

We no longer have dogs, but were we to get a puppy now, I'd litter train it from day one and I'd probably use the crate training method to achieve it.

Cheerio!

Do you have a neighbor you trust or a family member nearby to come and let them out?

If not, I would put them in a tile area, and put papers down, along with their water dishes, food, etc.

Leave a radio on, just to comfort them.

Thanks Karen, I got blonde highlights worked in my hair now..it seems to agree with me now.

I never leave my dog outside when I am gone, dogs can get in alot of trouble when they are not being monitored....and my dog digs holes when bored..gads, I would have huge holes in my yard, and trying to refill the holes are hard..never enough dirt! lol
