Pirate/buried treasue party

Now that the weather is nicer, a fun birhtday party for boys is
a pirate party. The invitation is typed on paper then the edges burnt to look old, guests are told to dress in pirate costumes.
Eye patches are given when guest arrive and a hidden treasure chest (with map) (x marks the spot) to the boys to find the buried or hidden treasure. We did this at the neighborhood lake/picnic area and buried it under the lifeguard tower. Each child was given a plastic bucket and shovel to help in the recovery. It was filled with candy and toy trinkets.

I like the buried treasure idea.
My 2 boys are having dual parties (their bdays are 10 days apart). One will be 4 & the other will be 1. We are doing a pirate theme at the park..
I wonder how I can get a handful of 3 yo's (from preschool class) to follow these directions..

any ideas?

We also did a combined birthday party for my boys. I have to say, a pirate party is one of my all-time favorites. We gave pirate hats to each child as they arrived. We created a treasure map out of brown paper lunch bag and burned the edges. It led the kids to an old trunk (treasure chest) filled with gold coins, jewels, etc. My boys have still been talking about it several years later!
