College Graduation Party

Hello All,

My daughter Jamillah will graduate from college in May of this year (Managment Science/Business degree). We are so proud of her accomplishment!!! We would like to host a nice elegant graduation party in her honor - place my backyard. I welcome any ideas on putting together this graduation party. She has plans on attending grad school in the fall please keep her in your prayers.

I helped host a graduation party for my daughter from Law School the past May. My contribution was 150 chicken nuggets, homemade, using a wet dip (egg, milk, flour and seasoning). I also made a large cake, (four 9X13" cakes put together). Since I don't make good icing roses, my sister gave me the one she made and didn't use on her son's cake the month before. She had frozen them. They worked perfectly. I also made a veggie tray. Some friends and family also contributed other food items and it was a great party. If you ask people to help,they will. You really don't need a menu as there usually are no duplicates when people bring the food they excel in making.

You might want to search for freezable party food on the some of the freezer cooking or OAMC lists for ideas that you could do ahead.

Congratulations to your daughter on her upcoming graduation!

My daughter graduated from college last May. We had a backyard party with family, friends and a few college buddies and cooked food on the grill. We also served meatballs & sausage, salads, and a sheet cake. Our guests enjoyed the food and were able to go in or outdoors as they pleased.

In addition, I made a "graduation" display on top of our entertainment center about week before the party (some time between the actual graduation ceremony and the party). I pulled out from our old family photos all of the pics that contained my daughter's "other" graduations, i.e. kindergarten, grammar school, high school and then, of course, her college portrait. It was a nice way to reminesce and see her educational milestones. Among the photos, I also displayed the college graduation program, diploma certificate and any other mementos she received. Our family enjoyed seeing the photos of her growing up and it was a great way to add to the other graduation decorations (i.e, balloons, etc.). I kept the display up for about a month in honor of my daughter's achievement & also made sure I took a photo of the display.

Depending on how much you have to spend and what you have to work with, these ideas may work for a party in the backyard. If the party is at night, then consider using white Christmas lights. Create a canopy effect by stranding the lights from a tree or pole in the middle of the backyard and string the lights outwards to reach the fence, trees, etc. Does this make sense? Hopefully so. Also, if the party is at night you may want to get Tiki torches to put around the yard--you can get them at party supply stores or stores such as Bed Bath and Beyond and Linens and Things. They are cheap-I got mine for $3.00 each and a big bottle of the oil for $3. Hopefully this will give you a little help.
