If you're on the computer all day, take advantage of it! Most
basic email programs (I use Microsoft Outlook) have a calendar
program for scheduling meetings and events. I program each of
my monthly bills into the calendar with a recurring "Alert" to
let me know every month at least two days in advance of when a
bill is due. (I pay 98% of my bills online, so paying the day
before works for me. If you are still mailing checks, you may
want to set your alert a week ahead of time.)
For example, my rent is due on the eighth of each month, the
light bill is due on the seventh of each month, the credit
cards are due on the first and eighteenth, etc. You can even
color code the bills on the calendar to distinguish them from
other activities. For instance, use red for important or green
for money. The Microsoft Office Assistant (or HELP program)
can talk you through setting these up.
This program has saved me late charges and overbalance fees,
and has helped to improve my credit score. I'm hoping that a
better credit score can lower my interest rate on a mortgage
in the future.

Sounds wonderful! Can someone help me figure this out?

I have used calendar programs myself for a few years now. I've used Microsoft Outlook which is more flexible and, my first one, Microsoft Works Calendar which is still pretty good. I toyed a little with mozilla's version of a calendar program that looks very similar to Outlook.
I love the calendar program for the appointment alerts. I don't use it for bill reminders but I would imagine it is the same as a regular appointment. I use it at work for reminders on things that need to get done by a certain date.
In Outlook use can set up appointments (that you can also email to others) or you can set up a task list (kinda like a to do list).

Connie, do you have Outlook? If you do, just go into the Calendar program, head over to the date you wish to select, and make an appointment just like you would enter a doctor's appointment. You can have the "alarm" go off and everything.
I haven't used OE in a very long time but IIRC it has a calendar or datebook feature. It is not installed on my computer so I can't check on that from here.
You could use Mozilla's Thunderbird for email and add in lightening for the calendar. It is VERY similar to Outlook's calendar program. I had to use yahoo's calendar while I didn't have my own computer. I like the Outlook calendar because the reminder pops up in a window on your pc with a noise. You don't have to read the email to get your reminder.
