How will you celebrate Memorial Day this year? Do you go to a local parade for a veterans, a family picnic?
Sense my husband is a veteran and our son is active duty army this is a big day for us. We will participate in our local Parade. Dh and I both walk in the parade. My older daughter will read Flanders Fields at the ceremony. Then in the evening our local VFW has a dinner and annual fundraiser drawling. Both dh and I help at the drawling. Last week both dh and myself help put new flags on the graves of our veterans.

Usually we are not home on Memorial week-end and this year is no exception.
We are headed to Eastern Oregon to visit our relative and go to the Sumpter Valley Flea Market. It's normally a very small town but on the 3 summer holidays it really grows with everybody and their brother there to sell their wares. I haven't been for a few years so it should be fun and the weather will be good too.
I always go up to visit my Mom and Dad before the Memorial Day as it gets pretty busy at the cemeteries on that day.
On ocassion we have gone up to the Vietnam Memorial for their festivities, they read all the names from Oregon that died over there.
Tomorrow night the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts will wear their uniforms to the local cemetery. They will place flags on each veteran's grave.
On Monday we all attend the town parade. The Boy Scouts traditionally make a memorial booklet listing each deceased veteran in town, and that is handed out after the parade. The Scouts also offer free hot dogs and drinks to all who marched in the parade and to the spectators.
Memorial Day in my community has always been a very special occassion. The Parade from the Legion to the Community Center begins promptly at 9:45 am. A local pilot who has a restored WWII bomber begins by flying over the parade route. Everyone gathers at the Community Center for a short program featuring a speaker, Honor Roll of the Dead, music, etc. After the indoor program everone goes outside for the 21 gun salute, placing of the memorial wreath, more fly overs and balloon release ceremony. The Legion members march back to their hall where everyone is invited for refreshments. Several years ago a very nice memorial was created at the Community Center to honor those who have served their country in the Armed Services. Here is a link to our local Legion website that shows the beginnings of the Memorial, its dedication and the last few slides are from Memorial Day celebrations. http://www.legionpost425.org/vet_memorial.html
Our family goes home after the service in town and packs up the car and heads out for one of the local lakes to do some family fishing. We fish until late afternoon and then head home as our town begins its two day celebration called "Whittemore Days" that is the official start to our summer.
We will be having a cookout at dad's. He gets to come home for the afternoon and enjoy the grandkids and great grandkins who will be there. I know he will be exhausted from the day, but it will be a good exhaustion.

I don't think that we are going to be doing much of anything that day. My dd's birthday is the 24th and my birthday is the 26th so we'll probably have cake for her birthday. My dh is working OT so my kids and I will probably just hang out at home.
