Your communities

How would you describe your community? Rural? Suburban? Urban? What about your state? Deep south? Midwest? Northeast? Are there mountains where you live? Lakes? a river? beachfront?

Bakersfield is in central California and it is very agricultural here.
Agriculture and oil are are biggest businesses.
Bakersfield has a population of about 250,000. It is a medium size city with a small city feel. Our downtown is thriving with restaurants, theatres, etc...
Our neighborhood is very suburban, close to downtown and shops, older neighborhood with big trees and a park.
Only 2 cross town freeways.................I have lived in places like Dallas with, like, a million cross town freeways!!!! LOL!!!

California is varied, very expensive to live in the San Diego area as well as the San Fransisco area but on the other hand, a very low cost of living in the San Joaquin Valley, where we live.
It's also varied as far as the fact that there are mountains, desert and beaches. Redwood Forest. Yosemite National Park. Disneyland.......... Napa Valley............
Hollywood.....
earthquakes, floods and wildfires.........

Trainlady I love your idea thought I would let you know about our area.

Think Maine Think Boothbay Harbor

Boothbay Harbor Mid Coast Region is small on a peninsual 15 miles in from Major Rt 1 but with many attactive sights to see. With 7 Lighthouses that can be seen by boat or car.
A visit to this region can be whatever you want it to be-a peaceful time to refresh your soul, an active time boating, fishing, hiking, playing golf and tennis, or a family adventure.

You'll be captivated by the independent spirit and friendliness of the people, as well as by the area's many contrasts. There are quaint village streets and shops, band concerts and craft fairs on the Library lawn, bustling harbors flowing with lobster boats, fishing trawlers, windjammers and pleasure craft. Explore quiet coves, rocky shores, meandering roads, lighthouses, islands, and a waterfront park in the shape of a whale.

Rent a coveside cottage and watch the lobstermen tend their traps, or put to sea for a close encounter with a barnacle-encrusted whale. Visit the Historical Society in Boothbay Harbor and the Museum in Southport to learn about ice cutting and ship building in days gone by. See the handiwork of local boat yards, which continue the tradition in state-of-the art materials, and keep alive our heritage of world-class boat builders.

Discover the wealth of sights, sounds and scents to savor-the lobster wharves, with clams and mussels steaming on the dock; the gulls' distinct cries; the tingle of sun and salt on your skin; the cooling relief of an onshore breeze and the pleasant expectation of a succulent lobster dinner served with drawn butter.

Come enjoy nature at its best. Spectacular sunrises herald the new day; tall evergreens march down the rocky coast, June's lupines and other wildflowers color local fields and roadsides. Bright, warm and sunny July and August days are tinged with occasional fog to add mystery. The Fall color and crispness of September and October is complemented by fun-filled seasonal festivals. Then it's the quiet of Winter, with snow, wondrous sea smoke, and magical holiday light displays at the Boothbay Common, in the Harbor, and Southport village. Spring brings new life to the land and renewed activity with the Fishermen's Festival in April, and the exciting Windjammer Days in June.

The days end with the sunsets-oh the dazzling sunsets in not-to-be-believed colors. Yes, we will capture your hearts and refresh your souls.

From me Boothbay Harbor great busy from May 30th till Oct 15th the everyone leaves and there are only about 250 people here for the winter so it makes ift easier to move around town we have
1 food store, 2 small bar type resturants, a Pizza & Sub shop, and of course 1 gas station open for the winter not gift shops or stuff like that are open all closed. Well I hope that give you some idea of our littlw town.

I love reading about different areas and your neck of the woods definitly sounds very beautiful!! I have been through many states on the train but have not, as of yet, been to the New England states!! But, one of these days!!!

It sounds like such a peaceful place, too! To watch the boats and fisherman and enjoy a lobster dinner...or fish and chips!! You know, I've never had lobster!!

And the sunsets....and the evergreens along the coast!!!!
Sounds like you live near heaven!!!

Thanks for sharing!!

I am from NH but am originally from Maine. (I have been to Boothbay Harbor and it is beautiful!) I moved to NH in 1985 when I got married. the town I live in is a mix of rural areas and more populated areas. My neighborhood is suburban - close to shopping, movies, theaters etc. but yet my street is very quiet and peaceful. I love living in NH and don't think I would ever like living anywhere but the Northeast. I like living close enough to go to the ocean or go hiking in the mountains. I am only 2 hours from Boston, Mass. or Portland, Maine yet it is country enough to go camping or to the lakes. I am close enough to visit family yet far enough away to have my own space. It is nice to see that some people who answer this post are also from the Northeast!!

Hi Craftylady, I live in Laconia, NH which is about an hour or so from Derry NH. I used to go to Londonderry NH a lot when my in-laws lived there in the late 80's but my father in law has since passed away and my mother in law now lives in Saco, Maine. My brother in law recently bought a home in Derry. Nashua is a little over an hour from me. Your husband is probably familiar with the Lakes Region (Laconia, Meredith, Moultonboro, Alton, etc.) It is a beautiful area to live in. I am glad my mother in law lives in Saco, though, because when we visit we can go to the ocean. We go to Pine Point a lot. I grew up in a small town in Maine not far from the NH Border. Of course when I was a teenager back in the 70's Old Orchard Beach was the place to go. Haven't been back there in years. Where you live in Maine is very beautiful. Does it get crowded in the summer during tourist season?

All my life has been in the midwest, Minnesota to be exact. I grew up in St. Paul, the capitol of the state, and after marriage I moved to Minneapolis. From there on it was always suburbs, Edina, Shoreview, and now Roseville. I love the 'burbs' because they are close to everything the cities have to offer but yet it feels like I'm in a small town. There are activities going on all the time winter and summer such as parades and fireworks, music in the park and much entertainment for all. There are hills for skiing and many rinks for skating. The Mall of America is close, as is the airport, Amtrak station, and, of you're so inclined, the Greyhound Depot. There are lakes all over, great for swimming, fishing, sailing, and a lot of water skiing is done on the rivers. In the winter they are all dotted with ice houses for fishing. People camp in the parks nearby, and even venture across the river into Wisconsin, which is very close to the Twin Cities. You will find people of all ethnic backgrounds and restaurants to match. I love it here and wouldn't want to move to any other place!

I live in a small tourist town called Natchez, MS. It is right on the Mississippi River. We have 1 casino now and there is another one going to come to town. We have two paddleboats that stop on their route up and down the river. There are no major industries here. The Paper Company, and the tire plant have closed down. It is an old town that needs help. (I don't know why I am still here.) There are lots of antebellum homes here that date back before the Civil War. Here is a link to a list of sites about Natchez: http://www.seekon.com/L/US/MS/Natchez/. And this is to our newspaper: www.natchezdemocrat.com. Our public school system has about 5,000 children in the Pre-K through 12 grade. We have two small colleges here. I have been here all my life although it would be nice if there was more businesses here.

I live in the small town of Borrego Springs in San Diego county in California. We are a "Snowbird" town. Our year round population is only about 3 thousand but in the winter we grow to about 10 thousand when all the people trying to get away from the snow decend on us. We are surrounded by the Anza-Borrego State Park which is the largest state park in the lower 48. It is desert here and can get up to 120 in the summer but the humidity is usually below 20 so it is very dry. My DH and I manage an RV park here so we are here all year. But we love the easy going life style and no traffic. Drawbacks are 50 miles to nearest supermarket or department store. 60 miles to the nearest hospital.
Winter temps are 70-80 day time and 50-60 nights although it can get colder and hotter at times. Our average rain fall is only about 4 inches a year.
