Do you recycle items? Do you wish there were more you could recycle than the common things like glass, newspapaer, cardboard, tin, and aluminum?
I recently found a way to recycle old shoes! They grind them up and then make materials for athletic area like playgrounds and tracks.
You can send then to:
Soles4Souls,Inc.
315 Airport Road
Roanoke, AL 36274
For more information go to:
soles4souls.org
If you have some ideas to recycle items and keep more things out of the landfills please post them here.
I bet there are more things around than some of us know and this will be a great way to share the information!

Do you have subscription to magazines and wonder what to do with them after you are done with them? Many doctors ofices, and nursing homes love it when you ask them if they will take your used magazines! My doctors office can't keep their waiting room supplied with reading material as they seem to develop legs and walk off.
You can also trade around the neighborhood with others that have different subsciptions than you do.
After they have finally become tattered and you are the person that ends up with those you can shred them. The shreds go into my compost where it very soon returns to the earth. Just another way to keep from filling the landfills.'What do you do with your read magazines when you are done with them?

Our local recycling center has finally started accepting plastics other than the usual number 1 & 2's that most places accept. So now everythng plastic that has any recycle number on it goes back for recycling! I have still noticed a few things (mostly lids) that dont have any recycle code on them at all. I plan on writing those companies and asking them to please use recycle type products for those too or they will end having many customers stop buying those products and I am one of them! What do you think?
Do you recycle everything that you can? Do you refuse to buy products that are wasteful packaging?

They never seem to have anything for women to read. Isn't it funny how they grow legs and walk away?
I've seen crafts that you can make out of magazines. I know that there is a picture frame craft that I've seen.
I also keep a few mags around the house for my kids to use when they need to do a project. My daughter had to cut out letters from a magazine to spell her spelling words the other day. It was nice to have everything on hand.
I think that the recycling project with the shoes is such a great idea!! When we lived in Kernersville, NC, there was a playground near our house that they had covered the ground with recycled, shredded tires. It was so nice to stand on and cushiony for the kids if they fell on it. I will definitely check out their website.
Thanks for posting all of this info!!!

Catlover, thanks for the info on shoe recycling. I always hate throwing away shoes that I can't donate.
I am very big into recycling. We recycle everything we can. Our recycling company also collects all plastics now.
I try not to use plastic ziploc bags, but when I do, I wash them and reuse them until they are no longer usable.
I use cloth bags at the grocery store. I do need to do better about taking them with me to other stores as well. Many stores will give you a 5 cents credit for each reusable bag that you use.
I also try to precycle - not buy things that are in wasteful packaging. I will NOT buy bottled water. I have a BRITA pitcher and will fill reusable water bottles with that.

Though NH does not have the "bottle bill", my dh and I recycle bottles and cans through his work. The good news is, our city if finally starting a recycling program in the spring for glass, plastic, paper, wood etc. They will provide us with two bins for sorting. My problem is, how to sort the trash inside before putting them in the outside bins when space in my house is very limited. Also, I have dc children who love to "throw things away" so how to teach the little ones how to sort.
I use old towels to wipe up spills rather than using paper towels, use cloth bags when grocery shopping, make "trash free" lunches for my family, donate clothes and other household items to Goodwill and give away books and magazines I have read and no longer want to keep. I am still always looking for new ways I can do better.
